Sorry but manual transmissions are obsolete. Ferrari refused to put a manual in the 458 Italia stating they will not use such outdated technology in a supercar and I for one agree.

The 458 is the first in Ferrari's range that wont be offered with a manual transmission. This is because the fumblings of the driver would just slow things down. The seven-speed gearbox, made by Getrag, has two clutches so it can shift seamlessly and in the blink of an eye. It used to be that if you opted for an automatic gearbox in a Ferrari it would be at the expense of performance — now its the other way around.

The double clutch is more for smooth downshifting rather that quick up shifts. The new 370z offers it and it's also an option on the M3 (both of them being manual). It is not exclusive to Ferrari.

Sports car should be manual, period. If you can't drive one, learn or look for another car. I love Ford's attitude on their Mustang Boss 302 and GT500. They are ONLY offered with a stick. If you don't like sticks or just prefer autos, FU, go look for another car. Ford!!

And a little FYI, Porsche only offers the GT2 and GT3 in manual. So much for obsolete.

Even leaving aside the fun of driving stick, anyone with any interest in travel should know how to drive stick, since the overwhelming majority of rental cars outside of North America are manual-equipped.

Link? I believe the 370Z is six manual or seven auto w/paddles, but not a DCT. It's the same transmission used in the G37.

Nice try. Not even remotely related. Unlike artificial insemination vs. sex, automatic transmissions (if done right) are actually superior to manual now.

Absolutely wrong.

While the best of the newest automatic transmissions can shift faster than a good driver with an MT, no TCM can replace the driver's brain with an important factor: Thinking ahead. The TCM only reacts to a smash in the pedal, the driver's brain is already thinking ahead. You won't understand it until you are behind a slow car in a 2 lane road and experience the pleasure of blasting thorugh it with a carefully planned downshift when the road gets clear....

Oh, and only the very best of the newest auto trans can beat the MTs for shifting. The bulk of the ATs still can't...

Same with the new Camaro ZR1.

wow you screwed up with ignorance there.
actually, manuals are superior including in gas mileage. you can ask any pro driver, CDL driver or pro reviewer of cars.
Auto's also rob power. Manuals you have far more control over a variety of road conditions. Manuals are still very popular, but there is nothing outdated, its just less used from mostly women and guys who never learned. They don't teach in chools cause it adds to complication, costs and the fact they think most people will just end up with an auto.
and paddles. lmao. wow shifting an auto, you end up with the same downsides to an auto and most paddles are not truely manual, many you can't even redline. lol paddles, those are the gay

Now i prefer auto's cause i'm lazy, but as a CDL driver, i clutch at work and driven many varieties. The only thing an auto's are superior at is being lazy. i like them for heavy traffic and daily driver but manuals are more fun and overall superior

I love how they don't even give you the option for an auto. A stick is the way the car was meant to be driven and they refuse to dumb it down for the general public. No wannabes allowed.

I was just referencing paddles for DCT and DSG, not conventional automatics or CVT.

yeah, nissan sold me the same "rev matching transmission" in 2006. as far as i can tell, after 5 years it's never done anything. downshift without blipping and you'll go thru the windshield. oh, but there's a permanently lit "REV" light in the middle of the instruments to remind you it's there.

You're the ignorant one. You're stuck in the past when manuals were better for performance and mileage. You're stuck in the past because you know nothing of the advances in auto trans. that have been made lately. Have fun driving the short bus manual. When you are stuck in heavy traffic, think of me will you? I'll be the one laughing at you having to shift for no gain whatsoever and in the case of Getrag trans in the 458 italia, LOSS of performance and fuel mileage.

Why don't you toss out your dishwashers and washer/dryers too so you can do it all by hand? It's more efficient too you can use less water and no electricity that way.

Actually today's manual gets an average of one mile gallon better on all ratings but they potentially do better than rated depending how you drive, autos there is no potential to alter patterns. Why do you think ford made the power shift?

Oh btw, I went to northwestern auto tech school. Man and auto trans were separate classes but I think you should do some more research honestly.

And stop being such an over sensitive, close minded drama queen.

I always wash my dishes by hand for that exact reason to be perfectly honest.

They must have just added it. They said when it first was announced they'd only put it in if people clamored for it. Guess they did, failures.

gotta sell it to people who don't know how to drive stick or risk losing at least 50% of the sales (going off the corvette's sales figures, I have no idea what the Camaro's are, but I guess it's more related to the gt500 as to buyer's demographic)

Very few cars enjoy the benefits of the advances you speak of. Using Ferrari as proof manuals are obsolete is ridiculous.

Only a handful of production cars ship with dual/clutch transmissions, and few of those fall into the "affordable and mass produced" category. Reviews/Reports about the new 2012 Ford Focus with the direct shift gearbox are not positive. Reports of harsh shifting and poor operation are too common to ignore.

Only a handful of modern automatics (non/dual-clutch) equal or better the gas mileage of the manual version of a given car.

Have fun driving the short bus manual.

Isn't that what driving should be? "Fun"

When you consider how much it costs to own and operate a car, as well as the amount of time many of us spend commuting behind the wheel, why should anyone opt for anything less than what they consider "Fun"?

I prefer manual, and you clearly don't. Why does either one of us have to be "wrong"? Why does one preference have to be better than the other?

When you are stuck in heavy traffic, think of me will you? I'll be the one laughing at you having to shift for no gain whatsoever and in the case of Getrag trans in the 458 italia, LOSS of performance and fuel mileage.

Do you own/drive a 458 Italia, or any dual-clutch equipped car? If you ask me, using a 458 Italia in heavy traffic is a crime against humanity.

Heavy traffic sucks. I often drive my manually equipped car(s) in heavy traffic. It sucks just slightly more than doing the same in an automatic.

Why don't you toss out your dishwashers and washer/dryers too so you can do it all by hand? It's more efficient too you can use less water and no electricity that way.

I agree 100% with your analogy.

If I wanted an "appliance" to do the work for me, I would drive an automatic. But since I enjoy being actively involved in the process of driving, I don't mind getting my hands dirty.
