this happens again? http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2011/07/19/would-be-carjackers-thwarted-by-stick-shift/

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) — Anne Arundel County police say two men who tried to carjack a vehicle ran off when they found out the car had a stick shift.

A man was talking with acquaintances early Tuesday at the Exxon on Camp Meade Road in Linthicum when two masked men, one with a gun, tried to take his car.

But the suspects ran off when the man said his 2005 Volkswagen has a stick shift.

I should call my insurance company and demand lower rates due to my "undriveable" car.

I have been saying this for years. The number of people who can drive a manual car dwindles every generation.

The driving schools don't teach it anymore. I can't. I'd like to learn but none of my friends have a manual car and you can't rent them anymore.

I used to work with a guy who says he and a friend decided they wanted to learn to drive a stick shift when they were seniors in high school so they stopped by a local used car dealership one day after school and said they were interested in buying a car and asked to take one for a test drive. The salesman was busy so he tossed the keys to a "Mexican mechanic" and said take these guys for a drive. My friend remembered a whole lot of grinding gears and the mechanic yelling "no es syncro, no es syncro." I'm pretty sure he didn't learn to drive a stick shift in 20 minutes, but at least he had a chance to get the basics. I doubt that a teenager could walk onto a lot with his best friend and test drive a stick shift these days (or any car for that matter,) but an adult probably wouldn't have too much trouble. When you stall 3 times in the parking lot the salesman might question rather you've driven a stick shift before, and may ask you to go learn how to drive one before destroying any more cars on his lot.

when i bought my truck (dodge ram 1500 manual trans) the saleman asked if i knew how to drive a stick. i laughed and said yes. he was saying id be surprised how many people never learned. first car i ever drove was a stick, and ive owned many of them since i got my license. my kids will learn it as well, as i think it gives you much more insight and detail to what your car/ engine is doing while driving.

I've driven manual a few times. I'm not too good at it since I don't practice much, but I don't really grind gears. I just have a hard time starting from a stop (particularly on a hill) and sometimes my shifts aren't all that smooth. But having driven 3 different manual cars, each one different from the other, and only driven any of them twice, it isn't surprising

I want to get another Camaro, and I want it to be a 6 speed.

Sorry but manual transmissions are obsolete. Ferrari refused to put a manual in the 458 Italia stating they will not use such outdated technology in a supercar and I for one agree.

The 458 is the first in Ferrari's range that wont be offered with a manual transmission. This is because the fumblings of the driver would just slow things down. The seven-speed gearbox, made by Getrag, has two clutches so it can shift seamlessly and in the blink of an eye. It used to be that if you opted for an automatic gearbox in a Ferrari it would be at the expense of performance — now its the other way around.

Sex is obsolete when you can do artificial insemination. Yet I bet your wife/girlfriend/cousin tolerates your "fumblings".

Nice try. Not even remotely related. Unlike artificial insemination vs. sex, automatic transmissions (if done right) are actually superior to manual now.

So what? Is there a problem with offering a manual for those who still want them? Just because they are "obsolete" doesn't mean they can't be used or don't serve a purpose. And generally speaking, a manual can handle more power and last longer than an auto.

Just because you might not like them doesn't mean others don't either. Nobody forces you or anyone else to buy one

That is funny. I mean I can understand why people don't learn to drive stick, but most guys should learn how to just for ego, if not for the practical purposes.

If just the same as not being able to jump start a car, change a tire or oil.
