I lost my job of 3 years today...

Check this out...

It was my first job, but it was a job that I was content with working until I finish local college. (another year & 1/2). Well for the first 2 1/2 years I worked under a full-time boss who was acutally really easy to get along with, and kept everything structured and made work as stressless as it can be in an Italian Restaurant. Well after 14 years he descides to teach cooking at a local school in the area... so he leaves his (2) brothers in charge. Well the brothers are like Jeckle and Hyde. One is a complete dick while the other one is a reflection of my old boss.

Anyway, let me cut to the chase... buisness is starting to slow way down due to untrained people making the food, and lack of structure in the kitchen because there's no full-time boss anymore. He blames it on everything but himself, of course. So he cuts the amount of workers in half! Do you know what that does to the workers? Man, I have never seen people my age (under 20) work so hard. Well the guys a moron, and he knows that I think he's a jacka$$, but I do my best to get along with him... Also let me metion that I'm the senior cook there... I'm the one that keeps the place alive. Well the dick calls me up this morning and says that he "can't afford to keep me on the schedual and that I should call him come summer time when it picks up"!

I'm like wtf? Summertime? What the hell am I going to do for $ between then? It's not like I even make more than other workers (which is another story), we all make the same. So instead of getting rid of a newer crappy worker, he cuts me? At least the a$$hole could of said he hated my guts or something, but instead he blames it on "being slow".

So I called my ex-boss, just to inform him of this incident. He calls up his brother and asks him why? He says it's because that's what he wants to do...

You work 3 years at a place, don't take any un-nessary days off, work the busiest 3 days of the week consistanty, and the bastards can't even give you a 2 week notice so you can find another job. I rely on my income for insurance and other stuff and now I'm screwed unless i can get another job ASAP.

Some people! :| :| :| :|

That's lame..... good thing for you there's a shortage right now in just about every field, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a decent job. And when that idiot comes back asking you to come back when things 'pick up', tell him to shove it.

I am sure you will find another. With 3 years at one job they cant refuse.

BTW, I am not sure if its a California only law, but if you get fired from a job, the company that hired you is required by law to pay you two weeks pay or give you two weeks of notice.

I wonder if it's like that in NY?

I mean, I really deep down hated that guy. Guess he got the last laugh, I had an exit to that place all planned out.

Weak... Now I just hope my next job will last me though the holiday season.

you shouldn't have a problem finding another job... if you want one.

I know it sucks having to go out there and find it, but once you do, you'll be happy. You watch, it'll be better (and probably pay more) than the job you have now.

Don't forget, you qualify for unemployment. File for it right away to get what you have coming to you!

When one door closes, a window is opening somewhere.

Trust that there is something better waiting just around the corner, and then go find it!

This has happened to me before, and believe me, each time I was actually happy for it in the end.

Hell ya! You were offically laid of. He said so himself "come back during the summer"

You can claim unemployment! Granted, you'll probably have found another job by the time you get a check, but still, at least you'll get some reimbursement out of it.

the good guy is probably right. In most states, even if you're employeed 'at will', you are still entitled to 2 weeks pay if you are laid off. Check into it.

There has to be a resource on the web with NY law, and I know there are some other memebers here from NY.

That's life. This won't be the only time.

Life isn't fair. Your boss isn't motivated to be fair, only self-interested, like everyone else.

You shouldn't presume fairness ever is part of an employment contract -- unless you, yourself, is the employer.

Your parents can't fire you; everyone else can, and will.

Welcome to the treadmill.

Best of luck. The job market is tight and your loyalty at your last job will be a plus. Be sure to emphasize you were let go because of slow business and not because of your skill. I too know what it feels like to work with an a$$hole. I was lost for the first few doays and worried about money and stuff but then realized it will all be ok.

Keep us posted.

You can get unemployment to tide you over until you get a new job Im sure. You paid for unemployment when you were working, so you might as well use it.

Let me add to what was said about things like this actually working out for the best. You sound like the type of employee many people would love to have - and chances are your next job will indeed be better. I'm sure things are going to be better in your new job. Good luck with your job hunt!

...oh, and just to add 1 more thing. When you go in for an interview at your next job, don't say anything bad about your previous employer. People looking to hire really tend to frown on hearing negative comments about your previous employer because to them it signals a negative attitude in general.

Good luck finding another job tomorrow, shouldn't be that hard

Ya... I could write a book on all the mistakes of the last employer.

The only positive about the last 6 months would have been that I wasn't the one killing the buisness. If I was in charge I would have heard alot more crap than the "brother" did. Of course things would have been different.

Well got to shave and bathe (hehe) tomorrow. Time to go out to the city and find me an ole factory job. Maybe something outside of the 120degree kitchen.

I know it may not seem so now, but trust me when I say that it is best to get the hell out of situations like that.
I know quite a few people that have had a very similar experience and time and again they've said that they were glad to be out of the situation. Staying tends to lower morale, will to live, desire to let these kind of people remain alive; you know what I mean.
I'm sorry you went through such a hard time. I am positive that you will find a better situation. If it's any consolation the people that I mentioned are now all in jobs that they are thrilled with!
Good luck

Of course, you could go back to work for about 30 minutes to teach them all a lesson.

Oh, sorry. You weren't a postal employee. Nevermind.

That really sucks man...

I heard somewhere that working at Radio Shack around this time of the year can earn you some mad money. You get paid on commision so the more you sell, the more you make.

That's why one should alway ripp their boss for whatever the're worth & whatever you can get away with. It's also why one should join the union.

Anyway one should never work below what one's dignity demands, unless its for top dosh. So your better off gone.

Yeah, I work with BowDown (BTW Killer... I send my condolances) The two guys that are running the buisness suck... I mean, the one is a real @$$hole, the other... just like our old boss, Great, fun to be around and fun to work with... unfortunately he's not around nearly the amount of time that the prick is. Our Old boss is from the same family and has been working with us as of recent trying to cool the flames, and in my opinion has done a good job so far, but it's only been a week. I mean, if he wanted to put the buisness out of buisness, he shouldn't have turned it over to his father and two brothers... he should of just put up a closed sign, now the workers are suffering.
