People are also driving much larger vehicles on average compared to when I started riding in the 80s. I used to notice the odd Bronco there, the odd Suburban there, now it feels like literally everyone and their dog are driving top-heavy three ton behemoths. Maybe it's just different in Texas.
in USA (and similar countries like gulf oil states, i.e. low gas prices, love for big cars, big roads and huge expanses of empty space and suburbs) the cars are bigger than anywhere else, the first time I saw a ford raptor I was amazed by how big it was. I understood why they were called trucks. Before I was a bit baffled by the term because all the pick-ups I had seen were just 4x4s with a different back.
Cars have gotten bigger everywhere anyway.

Sorry Zivic, I read this post and thought it was about the how people perceive motorcycles as dangerous and their thoughts upon knowingly taking part in dangerous activities, hence my comment about the fellow berating me whilst smoking. I regret that you did not find it relevant

As for my comment about bread, it was intended to as light relief and not at all intended to be taken as advice to avoid eating bread. I was trying to show that many things can be seen as dangerous through a juxtaposition between a real dangerous activity and a benign one. The last thing I want is for people to give up eating bread based on something they read on the internet.

Riding a motorcycle is dangerous...not just perceived so. I agree, people will smoke a cig and then feel the need to tell you how dangerous riding a motorcycle is and how big of a fool you are for riding. People are stupid if you haven't already figured that out.

I do dangerous things. Heck I am a farmer, which I have seen ranked in the top 5 most dangerous occupations. Maybe I feel I have enough danger in my life that I don't feel I need to add any more. Maybe the OP sits at a desk all day, and riding his bike is the only bit of danger he has in his life.....?

Bigger cars isn't the problem. It's texting and smart phones. I gave my bike to a distant relative because I stopped riding. Riding just became too dangerous for me, and I couldn't take the risk.

I work in an office. I've been an office worker since the mid 90s. During that time I've also surfed quite a bit, cycled thousands of miles including commuting and riding a few centuries (100 mile bike ride) and taken up motorcycling. I also enjoy shooting sports, hiking, swimming, and spending time with my wife and son and doing the things I love with friends.

I certainly wouldn't define myself by my job.

never said you did... I think, based on what I read on this forum, you would define yourself as a bike rider above most everything else. this is what I find odd about many people that I know that ride bikes. They seem like they are on another level (for better or worse) because they "ride". You continually post here about your bike and your riding and all sorts of things related to riding.

if you don't like people pointing out how dangerous riding is in regards to your OP, don't ride. Guess how many people have felt the need to approach me to tell me the dangers of riding a bike? ZERO. I think I found the solution to your problem

Damn Jules is a rebel y'all. Never mind the fact his garage queen bikes have never even had a scratch on them.
Sell that garage queen and buy a couple of track ready bikes to take to the local track. Post video of you dragging a knee and exiting out of the corner on one wheel with a shit eating grin on your face. Don't tell me dressing like racer boy on your garage queen bike is "living life".

Your comments about cars and drivers are fairly accurate imho. many drivers will be in accidents, but they have cages, crumble zones, seat belts, air bags, side air bags, active head rests, etc protecting them.

Yes, a lot of people think they are great drivers, and many are not. You think because the vehicle that is operated changes somehow only the "good" operators/drivers/riders will get on a bike? Sh!tty riders are a plenty, just like drivers

You're getting it. Lot's of those guys that say they are great riders are just as deluded as they are about the car skills.

The fact is that if you have to " lay it down " or got whacked by a car you the rider more than likely missed a defensive opportunity. Now remember the thing about absolutes, sometimes you just have shitty luck.

Different skill sets for different desired outcome, If you value speed over defence on the street, you aren't going to last long.

I lasted riding for the better part of 15 years from dirt to street. Hung it up at 30 because I wasn't willing to risk my license or the ability to walk any longer over a motorcycle. Too many idiots out there. Once cell phones got big I noticed way more people swerving in my lane or flat out turning into my lane without ever recognizing I was even there. Add to that the fact all these cities need money and prioritize ticketing drivers over all else it just ain't worth it. If you get kicks out of getting run off the road by a texting tween or getting radar every intersection you pass then by all means "live life brah".

That's not true at all. I post on many different topics on this forum. Motorcycles is just one of many.

It was merely an observation. Don't get your panties in a wad.

Garage queen? How many miles do you suppose a 1 year old Ducati garage queen would have on it?

Edit-It has been 12 hours now... still waiting for an answer Trashman. My "garage queen" has almost 11,000 miles on it, all of them ridden by me. Would you like to see pics of the rash on the shift lever where I touched down on Palomar Mountain? I'm about to go on my third set of tires on this bike.

Well, you ride bikes. Apparently, I'm a poser with a garage queen.

I'd been riding since I was 6, started with off-road, and switched to streetbikes 32 years ago when I got my drivers license, a total of 42 years. The last 20 years on a mildly modified ZX-11D. According to all these anti-bikers, I should have had an accident by now, and never should have survived this long.

Sadly had to give it up. I underwent anterior cervical discectomy & fusion on my neck two years ago, sometimes my arms go numb while riding, and my neck always hurts like hell the day after I ride, so I've given it up. Sold the bike in August.

I'm going to miss it, can't think of any other hobby that would be so much fun for so long. I could probably still ride a cruiser, but I don't enjoy them.

Oh, what caused me to need fusion of my C-5, C-6 and C-7 vertebrae? A car accident a few years ago that was not my fault (rear ended). Better park those cars fellas. They are very dangerous, and can cause massive injuries when you aren't even moving.

That's a really weird post. It seems as though you're upset because Jules doesn't ride his bike at the track. A position that's nothing less than bazaar. You also come across as bitter about him wearing protective gear, for reasons that aren't self evident.

I get that something frightened you, and you got too many tickets, but I don't get the animosity. Is it your position that since you quit riding everyone should?

Edit: Since it's going to be over 60 here today, I'm going to dust off the V-Rod, put on my Dark Wing Duck tee shirt, and go for a ride.

Where did you get the rear stands ? If I had a garage I would pick some up it beats having a buddy holding the bike straight while I'm removing the washers

I bought it at the Ducati dealership. Cycle Gear carries Pit Bull stands but not the single-sided swingarm stands.

I would never ride a motorcycle due to the highly increased risk of injury or death. That said, if someone wants to ride one, good for them.

I draw the line at people with children. If you have a family to take care of, you should not be riding a bike.

Actually, riders 25 or older with more than a year of experience riding have very little risk.

92% of motorcycle accidents involve riders with no formal rider training and 50% of motorcycle accidents involve riders with less than 6 months experience.

Statistically speaking, people old enough to have families are the least likely to be involved in motorcycle accidents.

While it's not possible to eliminate all of the risk, the vast majority is fairly easy to deal with by getting the proper training.
