Well then leave the thread and go shoe shopping or something, nancy.

...Right, attack my manhood.

Way to promote the gun-nut stereotype.

If a gun owner attacked your manhood, your manhood would be dead.

If a trained gun owner attacked your manhood, he's a bad shot.

Inspect thoroughly and function check and clean them. You should be doing the first two, so the last one shouldn't be a big deal.

If we were talking about cleaning trucks after going off roading would that make you feel creeped out as well?

What about washing dishes after cooking with them?

You're one of those dirty hippies aren't you! *sprays lysol*

No, not really. But do people find washing dishes/a truck relaxing? I'd like to meet said people and have them come to my house after dinner.

I do not find washing dishes relaxing, but I do find mowing the lawn, cleaning a gun, andcleaning my truck relaxing.

QFT. Cleaning my car, guns, and shoes each week is quite relaxing.

Same here.

I think I'll go hang out at democraticunderground for awhile. I need to swing my pendulum back.

(Paul Wellstone's Angel and the Ghost of Socialism are back, and they're coming for your guns. Boo!)

I do agree that while cleaning them I really get to appreciate the design and craftmanship that goes into them, but I still wish I didn't have to clean them. I can appreciate all that without actually doing the cleaning.

Look into ultrasonic gun cleaners. It's probably not something you would want to buy if you only clean one or two guns a week.

Actually, I've met various people who do. I hate dishes myself, but others love them. I like it when my car is clean, but not the actual cleaning...others really get into it. Different strokes for different folks.

It's like wiping the oil off a freshly machined component...you get a sense of satisfaction, holding something that was made for a purpose and is still all shiny from the lathe. Just don't cut yourself on the sharp edges.

Ahh, the smell of Hoppe's No. 9 in the morning.

Beat me to it!

Saw a guy on TV once uncover an old AK that was rusty and had shit caked alll over it. He angled it toward the ground, and poured a qt. of motor oil into the breach and down the barrel and let most of it run out. Slapped in a used but maintained mag, and proceeded to fire away. There was much more smoke than normal, worse than shooting with black powder, but bullets were leaving the business end. No way that would happen with an M4 or whatever...

Yes they can jam, but the AK's reputation is well deserved...

Question for the gun guys out there:

I have a .22 rifle and a Shadow Shotgun that have not been used in at least 10 or 12 years. Should I take these to a gun shop to have them cleaned or should I just buy one of those kits and do it myself? I just don't want to shoot them with a chance of some part being all rusted out on the inside.

Depends. Were they stored after they were cleaned and kept dry, or were they thrown into a closet after some shooting before the 10yr snooze?

Not sure what a Shadow Shotgun is, but were I in your shoes I'd get my gloves and gun wipes out and just take them apart and look. If you don't know how to disassemble these guns, then yes, taking them to a shop is recommended. As is learning how to do it yourself.

In general, a clean gun that's been lubed and kept dry can go quite sometime without needing anything. Certain kinds of springs, especially those kept under stress for long periods of time, are another matter though.

Cleaning it is almost as fun as firing it to me. Ive put way, wayyy too many hours into cleaning my M16's, than I can count. But if it doesnt work right.. you're screwed.
