This thing is awesome...

Comes with nero (finally a legit copy which I'm proud to have) and a fast sweet burner to go with it...

Previously I was only able to burn at 4x, and this sure beats the pants off that!

I too share Paulson's enthusiasm, I recieved mine on monday (had oral surgery) and finally got to play with it on wednesday, in a matter of 3-4 hours of passive burning (me taking my sweet old time between eating, watching tv, and general loafing) managed to burn 40 700MB CDs, and I only made 2 coasters, but that was because the files I was attempting to burn were corrupted and damaged AV files so I have no complaints, this thing just plain BURNS...

<<

I just burned a cd in 4 minutes! :Q

This is crazy! I can't believe I'm having so much fun burning!

heh, if you have the extra $85 around pick up this drive, it's a beautiful beautiful drive, 4:15 from start to CD-eject with write in, write out on a full 700 MB burn, can't ask for much more.

anyone noticed that it seems to spin at different burn speeds while writing at 24x? I ask because not only does the drive spin up more as it burns, but the coloration of burning chances over the radius of the disc, anyone else notice?

Yeah, the discoloration annoys me. It's because it starts the burn at 16x on the inner part of the CD, then moves up to 20x in the middle and 24x on the outer portion. It'll also adjust to burn at slower speeds if it detects that the cd media can't handle it.

The LTR-16101B can burn up to 90min, and the LTR-16102B can burn up to 99min.

I have a 12X and it writes a full 700MB CD in like 7 mins or so.
unless you have a really slow-arsed burner, no need for anything that fast, the difference gets far smaller, as the speed increases, I have found.

hell, 4X burns a CD in 15-18 mins (full)
and for example an 8X does a full CD in roughly 10 mins.

12X is around the sweet spot, being under 10 mins by a mile, I wouldnt really consider that slow... I can wait 3 mins more

I may soon get a 24x10x40 burner and then burn them both at the same time with my old crusty 8x4x32 side by side. sweet. possilbly buffer underrun?!
if this goes smooth i may even try 3 or 4 burner all at the same time, trying something that no one has. cdrom no matter how many X has very high access time of 100ms or more so this is the way to speed thing up greatly. I dont have all the time in the world to backup 30gig worth of stuff into cd.

Sorry, but I can't find any data on the 12101B =\ I would venture to guess it can write up to 90min, possibly more.

Yah Molex, I think you can do it with Nero. I think I saw an option to use two burners simultaneously.

What do you guys say the best speed for burning audio is?

I've been going at 4x for audio but I really don't know... I tried one at 16x even though my CDs are only rated for 12x and it seemed to be ok..

With two ide drives? Nope
With two SCSI drives? Hell yeah

I tried it with an ide TDK 12/10/40 and a Mitsumi 16/10/40 and had a slew of problems. I went with two SCSI Yamaha 16/10/40 (2100s) and haven't had a problem since.
