I LOVE REMOTE DESKTOP!!

This is so sweet, i just log into my home computer from work and play games all day (Unreal Tournment....)

The bragging of games isn't going to happen, even in a LAN environment. Remote Desktop is fast, but its certainly not fast enough to do things like play 3D games.

Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) is effectively the workstation version of the technology known otherwise as "Terminal Services." There are a number of differences but the principle (and the client software) is the same.

Windows 2000 Server supports Terminal Services, but Windows 2000 Professional doesnt. The client machine can be running any OS.

Last time I checked, Direct 3D doesn't work over RDC as there'd be no application for it. Even on a lan, a framerate of 5 FPS would be highly optimistic.

remote desktop is nice

but i don't know about the games thing

i use it to connect to my laptop, from my home desktop, because the only decent place to set my laptop is back by the servers under the stairs, so instead of walking 20 ft back there where there isn't a chair, i remote into it

and its great for getting into my TS's at work (via VPN on my cable)

there is a nice linux version as well -> linky

works nice enough i put red hat 8 (which includes rdesktop) onto a desktop at work just so i could remote into the MS TS's from linux

I was running X over networks a while ago. The thing I like about the linux version is this:

open a command line
ssh into the other computer
type ./gkrellm to start the program (it's a little system monitor proggy)
the gkrellm window pops up on my computer

ie: you don't have to get the entire desktop. I ran gkrellm from my machine + 2 other machines and all 3 instances appeared just on my desktop as though they were all being run from my machine. Cool stuff.

MAke sure it's turned on (System Control PAnel, Remote tab) Then just make sure you have port 3389 open for incoming on your firewall. Download the Remote desktop client from microsoft.com and run it. Type the IP of your machine and you should be done. -TAL

PS: I love RD too, but would love it more if the secret of D3D would be shared. LOL
