Don't get me wrong, Anandtech is definitely top notch and I have been here for over 2 years...
But I have been at MIT for 4 years and know first hand the level of Talent around.

Mister T, as a student I suppose you can be excused your lack of an inclusive world view. MIT is a world renowned school and gets it's students get far more practical experience than most schools, however, among the 40,000 collective minds on just this BBS are many practicing engineers, scientists, and even MIT Alum's. These folks collectively have more indepth knowledge, are more accessible, and can dig up and understand even more knowledge(including any MIT on-line info) faster than a mere MIT Nobel Laureate.

That is the power of distributed processes

I agree with you in principle.

However, I have first hand knowledge of the extent of the MIT community.
MIT not only has 4,000 undergraduates and another 4,000 graduate students, but also 1,000 faculty as well
as many joint ventures with industry other academia. Draper Laboratories, Lincoln Laboraties, the MIT Media Center and the Computer Science Consortium recieve tens of millions of dollars from industry as well as government EVERY year.

Anyway, my point is that many people underestimate how big and connected the MIT community is.

Inclusive world view huh? I know there exist many stereotypes regarding MIT students, but I must take
issue because I am definitely an exception. Honestly, I do not consider myself an academic. I went to school in order to open doors that normally would not have been open to me. Chances are that I will never go back to school as I have many job offers on Wall Street come next July.

By the way, I will admit that most MIT students could not piece a computer together if they had to...

There is definitely a difference between book smart and common sense smart. Personally I have the same title as Russ (NCNE). The ?hands on? method has taught me 99% of what I know about electronic, computers, and networks. Most people I know with certificates hanging on their walls can talk theory all day, but put them in front of something that's not working and you find they can't apply that theory to troubleshoot a problem. I think most schools put way too much emphasis on memorizing theory, rather then applying it.

The thing I always tell people about trouble shooting a complex system, even one they are not familiar with, is to eliminate what is NOT the problem first. Once you've narrowed it down, it's relatively simple if you know how to find the related information. That?s where Internet search engines come in.

I'll second everything in this post! You guys are really great and even though I've been so busy with work that I haven't had time to visit much. I'm reminded every time I come here why I enjoy it so much!
