I may have to donate $100 for AT in near future

I wrote in some other thread that if the next generation GPUs from ATI and NV will consume up to 250W power, as rumoured by the Inq., I'd donate $100 to AT. And I suggested the PCI-E specification and Intel's PSU guidelines as a counter-proof.

Today I found the followings:

PCI-SIG
PCI Express 225W/300W Graphics Card Electromechanical Specification Revision 0.3 Draft (1.10MB PDF): This specification is a PCI Express 225W/300W Card Electromechanical document that addresses graphics power and thermals greater than those supported by PCI Express CEM 1.1 and PCI Express 150W 1.0. Its purpose is to provide additional capabilities for PCI Express graphics within the existing framework of an evolutionary strategy that is based on existing motherboard form factors. This specification is primarily designed to deliver additional electrical power to a PCI Express graphics add-in card and provide increased card volume for the management of thermals.

Intel Developer Forum
- 1.0 Spec release targeted for early 2007
? Support optional 225 W and 300 W graphics requirements for add-in cards and systems
? Standardize new power delivery connector and new power sequencing scheme
? Define interoperability between 225W/300W graphics components [225W and 300W cards have new interface boundary conditions that may require improvement to existing chassis form factor and power delivery systems.
? PCI PCI-SIG investigating ATX form factor
? No intention to preclude BTX form factor

^Ahhh, after paying $450-900 for dual graphics cards, what's another $50-60 for a beefier PSU?

Good find by the way lopri. I was wondering if there was any possible validity to the 225-300W next gen cards. Guess it's possible now with the new PCI-E spec.

noise. Find me an even close to quiet 700W PSU..an even close to quiet cooler which can dissipate 250W coming off a gaphics card.. 80db computer aint my idea of a good time.

Doesn't the OCZ GameXstream 700W have a 120mm fan on it? Wouldn't that be quiet?

Also the IDF thingy actually implies SLI / Crossfire setup with these power hogs.

interoperability between 225W/300W graphics components

wow, not lookin good man. if you caught me a year ago i woulda had no problems with this, but Im planning on getting a new case with 2 120mm case fans, just got some new 80mm Stealths to replace my case tornados, and Im looking at an auto temp 120mm Vantec for my CPU. Tornados do move air, but Im tired of the noise and having to adjuast them EVERY time I go from gaming to surfing . Im cool with some noise; not a silent PC guy at all, but GD 5 Tornados going for BF2.... a year has been long enough and thats been WITH TWO Nexus NXP-305s! I cant even FATHOM a 300W card, let alone a friggen SLI setup with em and not going deaf.

They are gonna have to do something quick, like maybe a self contained watercooling unit per card or something. But 300W a card? not a chance.

nvidia's gonna come though for us.. No way will I beleive they go from 50W on a 7950GT to 250W very next gen until i see it. It better be 5x faster if so to match thier power multiplier.

Self-pwnage?

Aahaha.

It's very disturbing though.

The increasing amount of power consumed is just disgusting in efficiency terms IMO...

Power consumption doesn't really concern me as long as it's quiet. Here's hoping they contoinue using the 7900 GTX cooler.

Some how i dont see any GPu's Actually drawing that much power, the PCI-E slot may Alot that much power for the GPU but it dosent mean it needs to draw all 300w. but at any who if this does turn out to be true all of the NXGen cards are going to be FLOPS becasue no one wants to dish out the more money for a new PSU and mostlikely a new set of fans.

The best idea i think would be for ATI and NVIDIA to go to some one like Artic cooling or another Aftermarket cooler maker and say if you make a cooler for this card for really cheap for us we will make sure yours is the olny After market cooler that comes out for this card. this would not olny keep a nice water cooling system that could be sold allready installed on the card very cheap but it would allot lots of cooling capacity.

but ya the best choice would be a water cooler for that much friggin WATTAGE, they would have to desgine something like the Toxic cooler but it would have to work like 100 times better to cool that efficently.

I'm sorry, but if you guys start using that much energy just for your vid cards, Al Gore will have to kick you off the internet.

Just put a couple of these in cases and you can heat your room with it in the winter

I have heard that the next gen after G80 and R600 is when they are going to work on making better cooling and power consumption.
I hope they do work on lowering the power consumtion and not just figure out ways to make your card get more power by using a new connector, etc.
If they do decide to use water cooling, it better be a more viable option than the "toxic" cooler, which cost $100 more and didn't really cool much better than air, but again this does not address power usage.. better cooling does not reduce power requirements, it just reduces temperature.

We just have it reversed from those snowbirds bro. They pay at the butt to keep the place warm, we pay out the butt to keep the place cool

Is that the actual pull from the PSU or are those draws measured at the socket? Either way, it would be pretty obscene.

Let's say the actual draw is 200W, that would be about 200/12 = about 16.7A on the 12V line via PCI-E slot + molex.

If true, G80 better be at least twice as powerful as the current generation to justify the massive increase in power usage/heat/expense.
