Not sure if it's been mentioned, but you'll absolutely want at least 1 good scratching post. Cats need somewhere to maintain their claws. A post with sisal rope is often best, although sometimes your cat may prefer rug or cardboard posts. If you have a larger home, you may need more than 1 scratching post. This will save your furniture.
Yeah definitely have multiple scratching things. I have a
cat condo (looks kinda like that) that I got from Meijer on-sale that he can use to scratch on and look out the window if he climbs to the top two levels, a nice
Scratch post from Amazon that he uses a lot, a
Turbo scratcher that I got recently and he frickin loves, and a big
cat tree I got at Walmart that he can scratch on too (this one from Amazon looks to be the same one; I will say while it works it's built rather cheap and so don't expect it to last a lifetime).
I'd say he uses the cat condo and that nice Amazon scratch post the most. I also have the stuff spread out between my living room and bedroom.
My sister and her family recently got a cat since their previous one died, and she's miffed that he keeps scratching their furniture and doors and whatnot. Then I was told she doesn't have a single thing for him to scratch. Well... no shit! LOL, jeez. I mean, toys aren't a certainty that they won't scratch your stuff but without them there's a certainty that they will.
Mine doesn't scratch furniture but he does occasionally pull at the carpet where it meets the walls. It frickin pisses me off but he doesn't do it often and it's crappy carpet (though I do live in an apartment and would have to pay if it gets too bad).
