I might have to reinstall XP...

In case any of you have noticed, my computer has been having a host of problems for the past few days. They have been caused by Microosft System Restore, Symantec Norton Antivirus 2003 issues, and DLLs that I have deleted (though I checked to make sure they were spyware?).

There are currently several bugs, and if I can't fix them, I will have to reinstall. I pray I don't have to at the moment.

1) Active scripting doesn't work in Internet Explorer. The settings allow it and everything, but it simply doesn't work. This might not seem like a big problem, but WindowsUpdate uses a mix of scripting and ActiveX, and I can't use it anymore! I could use the System File Checker, but that leads us to Problem #2.

2) The included System File Checker utility doesn't seem to recognize my installation media (I have XP Pro). I bought my computer from an OEM manufacturer and sent me the disc along with it. I vaguely remember a problem like this from the beginning, but it has never been important.

3) The Help and Support Center doesn't work. Probably related to #1.

4) The extended help in the Microsoft Management Console windows is missing. For example, when I run services.msc and look at the services in extended view, I see NOTHING at all, not even the list. I can't imagine why this is happening.

======

I removed several 'application extensions' with suspicious names and an identical size of 314kb from my System32 folder because of spyware. I have tried to get rid of Gator software and an HDPlugin. At the same time, CONFLICT.1 and CONFLICT.2 folders in the Downloaded Program Files folder were damaged.

Currently, NAV2003 is completely uninstalled as far as I can tell.

I'd rather not do an in place reinstall of XP to fix the IE problem, and I don't know how I'd reinstall IE on XP since it is an integral part of it.

Did you try spybot or adaware instead of manually removing the spyware?

It sounds like a reinstall is in order, though you may be able to do a repair install (boot to the xp pro disc, and just install over the existing files....that should repair and missing files and such)

Good luck!

IIRC you can download and reinstall IE in XP. I have done it in 2000 and think it would be the same for XP????
