what's wrong with duck served like that? as long as there's some pancake scallions and sauce.

Meh, that's about as close as you'll get if you're not in an area with a heavy Asian fob population. Not great, but I'll take it over no duck.

It's not the right way, because the whole point is that the meat is used for other dishes. The way that's pictured is for two-bit "authentic" Chinese restaurants run by 3rd-rate chefs that couldn't make it in, you know, China, for Westerners who don't know that Peking Duck is a specialist 3-course meal that uses an entire duck and not just the easily accessible, meaty parts that the White Man is used to eating off of any old thing that was slow enough to get shot by a 50 year old Hillbilly with a beer-gut.

Don't get me wrong, it tastes okay. It's better than what I could make at home, but it's not what I expect when I pay $30 for "Peking Duck". It's like paying $30 for a Filet Mignon and instead getting a Sirloin. Sure, it'll taste okay, but there's a big difference between Sirloin and Filet Mignon. Even with Sauce Béarnaise.

Maybe the Plum Duff will be better.

Of course duck breast takes different then chick breast... in that actually has flavor, but that is not what what I'm talking about.

I'm willing to concede a duck leg tastes somewhat similar to a chicken leg...if you've overcooked the bejesus out of both.

I would say severing chicken as duck is a bigger issue then how its cut to the point where it may even be illegal.
Additionally the first sentence of your post was about not being able to get duck...


The only non standard way about it being cut is that its typically cut a bit thicker... It's also plated a bit messy but otherwise its fairly close to what is standard, which every other picture from google shows. Somewhat related image is actually from Beijing aka Peking, which makes that the whitest duck I've seen but also makes it more authentic then anything you've had.

I suspect that is based more on how your use to it being seasoned then anything... Duck done in most ways takes remarkably similar to dark meat chicken.

My PCP is 1/2 Chinese, and he recommended a local Chinese restaurant's Peking Duck. I went with my sister (she goes to this guy too), and found the PD way fatty and was highly displeased. I seem to remember having been served PD many years ago that I liked a lot. I don't remember it being fatty and it was nice and crispy.

Anyway, duck is not something I think about or crave.

That's like serving a beef hot dog to some oversea population and claim they've just eaten the best gourmet beef burger...and they believed it. In the meantime people are debating - well it has some beef, and it's between some bread, and you put ketchup on it.

Cantonise roast duck is served chopped in chunks but Peking Duck it ain't.

There is like 1300km between Canton and Peking :awe:

the 1 time i had duck it was terrible. my friend told me it was because my eyes were too round.
Duck is not only chinese duck. I've never had chinese duck and I'm not even attracted to it because I prefer the meat, I'm a stereotypical white man. Fortunately, French cuisine caters to my European duck tastes.

Try duck magret cooked in any French way (i.e. grilled or smoked) before striking it off the list.

Much more likely you didn't have well prepared duck. Plenty of round eye duck dishes :awe:

it certainly was not well prepared

this friend was chinese and ordered in chinese. he got a bowl of tripe soup and something else i couldn't identify. he claimed it was excellent D:

Offals. Not a big fan of lungs but I like beef tendons, tripe and tongue.

I love a properly seared/rendered crispy skin duck breast. It tastes nothing like chicken, it tastes like duck. Nothing else tastes like duck.

TastesLikeChicken says duck TastesNothingLikeChicken, and Mr. Pedantic severely corrects other poster's duck misapprehensions.

I don't want to think about what Fanatical Meat might do.
