You clearly have absolutely no idea of the talents that Carmack posesses. He's not just some "manager", he's a hardcore programmer.

Tell me something I don't know BFG10k. I've already said I'm not the most informed guy about this but I've never seen any proof of him being such an incredible programmer. I've only read posts from people like you praising him, and that's about it.

Ever hear of this game called Quake III Arena? It only took two programmers to develop the initial engine (A few added later with the point releases). If that's not talent than what is?

How can anyone say that Doom III isn't going to be anything special? The game looks incredible and promises a great story as well as gameplay. I mean really, when has id let us down? If id didn't exist, a lot of your favorite games wouldn't (I.E. Soldier of Fortune, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament (id created the FPS genre for all you n00bs out there), etc.)

Bottom line: id will once again rock our world, God bless id software.

Was it even playable? Have they finally made a demo? I think it was at E3 that
They had a few playable scenes that they demoed. Carmack was there with all the creators showing what their new engine could do. And let me tell you, it was awesome! I know I've said this before, but there are no other word for it. Pictures just can't do this game justice. You know how when you turn anisotropic filtering on and FSAA on to make the game look pretty. Well that is great and all but you could do without it. With DoomIII, the added graphics and extras that the engine provides, adds to the game's ambiance. It creates a totally scary situations that normally couldn't be done with any other game. For instance, let's take the lighting. The guy (playing the game) shot a light above him (like a big rail light attached to the ceiling by chains) causing the light to go partially out and start to swing from the blast. Well since the light is moving, the objects' shadows in the room start moving. And if there is something in the room with you, it will start to go in and out of view since the light is moving all over the place. So the lesson to be learned, WATCH WHERE YOU SHOOT! Also, the creatures are freakin' AWESOME looking! None of this jaggy sh!t. It is a thing of the past. The creatures in the demo were smooth as hell and the motion was just fluid and natural as can be. Also, when he shot it with the shot gun, you can see EXACTLY where the pellets hit, and you can definitely keep shooting it while its down if you'd like. I'm telling you man, you just CAN'T over hype a game like this.

Well, not to disrespect id but without them there likely would have been a 3D revolution, eventually. No one should deny id their place in history but to suggest great 3D games wouldn't have come about with them is pushing it.
God bless id software.
That would be up to god.

Let us not forget that Carmack is on the board for both ATi and nVidia to name but a few. Surely, if they think he's tallented enough to be on their board in terms of design then it would be a safe bet that he knows what he's talking about. 64Bit colours comes to mind...
