I need a game that will blow me away

Well, I bought a new computer recently, and now I'm picking up different games that I previously couldn't run. The problem is, I'm not having particularly fun. I need some game recommendations, and no, it doesn't need to be brand new or have extreme graphics and nor does it have to be a certain genre since I play most kinds of games. This post isn't gonna be short but if you don't feel like reading it no one's forcing ya.

I previously played World of Warcraft like a madman, being the MMO-fan that I am. Well, I've got pretty bored with it by now though.

I finally tried Crysis, and while it has some pretty graphics (although I expected even better), it became dull and repetitive pretty quickly because it feels like I'm using cloak every few seconds to own everything. Boooriing.

I heard Fallout 3 is being considered the best game ever by many. Figured I'd pick that up, too. I agree that the game is really well made, but it becomes terribly slow at times. Best non-MMOG I've tried since Titan Quest though which I had a lot of fun with in the past. Probably the worst is that I get random lockups every now and then (and no it's not my computer... it happens only in this game).

Civilization 4 is a long time favorite, although I've played it so much I got bored with it. Figured I'd try the new Colonization, but I got bored there too. I need something a little more catchy and refreshing than that.

So I tried Left 4 Dead. Wow, this one is actually really great! Only problem is that I wanna hold off on it for a couple of weeks to play it online with my brother when he's got the time. I don't wanna run through the game before that. Great one this otherwise!

I borrowed Hellgate: London from a friend of mine. This game was pretty interesting, for a couple of days. It is now uninstalled.

Next up on my list is Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor. I'm still waiting for this one to arrive, but hopefully I'll like it. A friend of mine plays it every day so I assume it's not that shabby.

I feel like I've just gone through some of the supposedly greatest, and I'm not hooked on any of them save Left 4 Dead which I wanna hold on with for a bit. I guess I'll get some Fallout 3 going for now, but really, give me some recommendations of games you like. Which games blew you away or made you stuck for quite a while, and if you're not in a hurry, what was so great about that or those games?

Download Nexus: THe Jupiter Incident from Steam. Neat story, beautiful graphics, cool gameplay, although it might not be what you're used to.

I'd say give Braid a go. It was released for Windows Live recently and is available for purchase on Steam (I think it's 15$ - 13? here). There's a demo too for you get the hang of it. Though you probably didn't need a new computer for it to run

And if you get it, do not use youtube to give you the answers to the puzzles. I had a lot of fun figuring each thing I was stuck at.

Also, perhaps give the new Tomb Raider a go? I enjoyed it thoroughly (though the DLC packs are for the X360 only...). Also, the new Prince of Persia was very enjoyable too (same deal with the DLC though... ). Fallout 3 is really nice aswell - but you tried it already.

Assuming you'd get them by buying the orange box, you're forgetting the best part of the package, Portal

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys! I see some interesting stuff as I look the games up.

Regarding Half-Life. I played 1 and 2 but without any expansions or extras. Oh, how is Counter-Strike Source holding up these days? I used to frown, swear and nearly break innocent hardware over Counter-Strike back in the days, but it was a lot of fun, too.

Keep posting your favorite games, no reason to stop now!

Portal was the shortest, dumbest waste of money I've spent with Valve so far. If you're going to get Orange Box, Portal shouldn't be a deciding factor.

The Witcher was the best RPG released in 2007, 2008, and so far, 2009 as well. Definitely worth picking up.

Guess there is always going to be one hater... and in this case you really are on your own, even the zero punctuation dude had good things to say about Portal and that pretty much never happens. IMO from a pure gameplay perspective Portal was even more fun than HL2 though thats not saying HL2 was not a great game.

Another vote for Mass Effect. It was the best game I played last year and hasn't been surpassed yet.

From your preferences in the OP I would suggest Dawn of War 2. The multiplayer is pure tactical RTS but the campaign is a really interesting mix of tactical RTS and RPG which in my opinion really works.

Kotor, Mass Effect, Empire: Total War, Stalker + Stalker Clear Sky. These are the most epic games I've played in recent times, some more so than others. Fallout3 was good imo but not 'best ever' more like 8.5/10.

Anyway this cake is great-
It's so delicious and moist!

-In all seriousness, what the hell didn't you like about Portal? or TF2? Or HL2? Or HL:Ep1? Or HL2:Ep2?

They were all so amazing, that the Orange Box shall go down is history as the best friggen compilation ever released.

The Total War series has kept me interested longer than most games. Galactic Civilizations 2 was another I played a lot of. If you like sims, DCS: Black Shark came out recently. Vampire Bloodlines was on often overlooked game that's worth getting. For upcoming games, I'm really looking forward to Blood Bowl. Battlestations Pacific might be worth checking out; it comes out in a couple of weeks.

F.E.A.R. ( and the expansion parts) + F.E.A.R. 2.
Gears of War
CoD 4

Also, I finished Stranglehold a while ago, though the game is short, it was a lot of fun to play through it. I think someone here at AT recommended that title to me.
