The problem with that is you are always bitter and unhappy with everything else.

There is some truth to this statement. The bar simply hasn't been raised in almost 10 years.

It's so true. The BG series, SS2, DX, and the HL series.. man, really ruined gaming for me by being so damned good.

Another problem is your computer is too new to play these games. I played Deus Ex, that was good, but couldn't get SS2 running.

Some games I highly recommend:

Mass Effect - great storyline, fun RPG/Shooter gameplay
Bioshock - unique environment and interesting theme
COD4 - linear shooter but well-produced, feels like you're playing a movie
Stalker, Clear Sky - RPG/shooter, unique and immersive environment

L4D, Fallout 3, Bioshock, and I recently reinstalled BF2 and BF2142 and the game play is still one of a kind.

I just picked up Lost Planet on new egg for 10 bucks, if it suxor at least I can use it to benchmark my system I still need a new GPU but I'm waiting for the next generation.

FREESPACE 2!!!! Install the source-code project (open source total re-write of the game engine), and enjoy the beautiful graphics, epic storyline, fantastic gameplay, top-notch voice acting, and overall best damned sci-fi flight sim I've EVER played.

WOW.

FEAR 1 & 2
Crysis 1 & 2
Bioshock
Orange Box

Everything else has been meh, although, I will admit I really enjoyed HAWX but, it was kinda different, so I am not sure to put it on the list.

Same here. The closest I've ever been "blown away" by a computer game was EQ in 1998. It was totally new and hugely immersive. I played that game for years. Nothing has compared since then, and now at 36 I'm an old bastard, and no new computer game, (mmorpg or any other genre) will probably ever come close.

I couldn't get past the really horrible controls in this game. It felt like a console port for PC.

Thats what I thought too. It felt like a clunky mix of Neverwinter Nights and Titan Quest.
Shame, because supposedly it had an awesome story.

I think you'll enjoy GLQauke and Quake II more than what the others suggested. I still play these 2 games even now.

Most enjoyable RPG I've played.

+1 It will make you glad you played such a game but it will make you sad that it ended.

Play Crysis with the infinite nano suit energy and, for even more deranged fun, use only your fists, throwable objects, and explosives.

completely different expereince than standard SP fare.

You'll be disturbed by how much fun it is to beat a Korean to death with a frying pan.

Try the following games. I've completed all of them and loved every minute of it.

SpellForce 2 - Shadow Wars : a rare mix of RTS and RPG (and highly underrated and underreviewed in my opinion)
Company of Heroes - RTS
Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts
World in Conflict - RTS
World in Conflict - Soviet Assault
Command & Conquer - Red Alert 3 - RTS
Command & Conquer - Tiberium Wars - RTS
Warhammer 40000 - Dawn of War: RTS
Bioshock - FPS

Oblivion was the game that really blew me away when I upgraded my video card and processor. I only picked it up because I wanted to test out my new stuff, and didn't want to buy anything I had asked for for Christmas, but it quickly became my favorite game even amongst the games I had asked for.

Right now Eve is my addiction. Never played a MMO before, but this one seems right up my alley.

No one recommended Far Cry 2 yet !?

Very nice graphics and a good shooter with nice explosion effects.

If you're a sci-fi fan you should give Eve Online a try.

I thought Far Cry 2 was terrible. I never even finished it once I realized halfway through that I could be having a lot more fun playing other games. It was one of the rare zero punctuations reviews that I ended up agreeing with.

Well it's a matter of taste, if you like Crysis you should like Far Cry 2. Far Cry 2 got the same score as Empire total War on gamespot, but it wasn't plagued with CTD and a multitude of bugs.

I found the african setup really nice and exotic, you can snipe your way through the game, blow up small buildings, set fire to the grass, buy a wide variety of weapons and cruising the rivers on a boat just looks awesome. There's also a multiplayer mode.

If you're a multiplayer shooter kind-of-a-guy Call of duty 5 is your best buy.

I think I may have given up on this one as well, and that's something I don't usually do. Even if I hate a game I generally try to complete it, but this one I can't get into.

The thing of it is all the driving and no fast travel. This would be fine if there weren't stupid patrols and outposts that were constantly re-manned. It becomes a grind to finish a mission and go to the town and get another one. Then the "Buddies" always getting in your business...

It just becomes annoying.

In your title you stated a game that will blow you away.
Braid's fiendish design and praised "last level" did indeed blow me away. It had very original gameplay, different clever takes of manipulation on time in a platformer. But beyond gameplay, it's a very thought provoking title compared to your modern dull fps which so many publishers seem to love at the moment.

Even if you have played HL2, I second the Orange Box as a fundamental purchase. Foregoing all the HL titles, Portal is a mustplay along with TF2. TF2 is really a top original class based FPS that sets it apart from others with it's unique classes and art direction.
If you haven't played Bioshock yet, Rapture is a wonderful world which is very immersive and entertaining.

I also highly recommend:
KOTOR which is my favourite rpg that tells an amazing story. Check out KOTOR 2 also for better gameplay tweaks along with a more complex moral system.
Warcraft 3 and the frozen throne has a truly epic single player storyline and still very active multiplayer and modding community, this is one of my all time favourite RTS games.
Dawn of War 2, while I haven't even beaten the single player or been very active multiplayer due to being very busy with real life commitments, it's has impressed very strongly.
