I need a good RTS

I'm looking at playing a new RTS when I get my new computer. I'd mainly like to stick to an ancient style RTS. The futuristic ones look to fake to me, though SupCom looks wicked. I've been playin Warcraft III RoC for a few years now and I'm ready to move on to a new game. Any suggestions? (That new Empire: Total War game looks awesome but I don't want to wait till '09)

Rise of Nations.

/thread

RoN is the best RTS of all time, in therms of gameplay mechanics, IMO. Every aspect of the game is tuned perfectly, the economy, the combat, the macro-managing, the tactical battles, the strategic endgame, the early game raiding, the anti-micromanagement penalties, the armageddon clock, etc etc

Rise of Nations is a good choice.

There is also Rome: Total War or Medieval 2: Total War

You can't be serious. RTW is unique and dominates the field.
If you broke your rise of nations disk and could never play it again there are many similar games like the AOE series and other clones that could take it's place.

For Rome Total War on the other hand there is no clone or replacement and the battles...there's just nothing remotely like it.

Go ahead with Supreme Commander, buy the gold edition or the expansion (original should only be bought to unlock playing online as all 4 factions) If you only get the original, you can only play online with Seraphim, nothing wrong with that.

Yeah; considering all the races are exactly the same with different models.

Uhh, they're basically large armies getting thrown at each other. it's just tactical stuff. Nothing too deep, but I have heard good fun can come out of it.

The most amazing and in depth strategy you will ever experience.

Micro control of realistic armies on a battlefield where units get tired from exhaustion and route from fear, become emboldened by the presence of a general or run in fear of oncoming war elephants. This is exactly where strategy was born in the heart of mankind.
Little tougher than taking on AI as well.

There's no love for Dawn of War in this thread?

Well let me be the first here to highly suggest it. The original and Winter Assault (the first expansion pack) are must haves, the other two expansion packs are extras that aren't "necessary" although still quite good enough to buy them in my opinion. It's a visceral, violent universe, the voice acting are superb, the story in the original is told almost like a movie, and even though the graphics aren't as good as they were two years ago or so they shouldn't distract you from the pure amount of fun you'll have, I'm pretty sure. And Relic, the developers, found a way to make resources being accumulated in an intelligent manner, forget about the usual harvesting units and seeking the forests to gather carbon... it ain't so anymore. Try it and you'll see.

Another vote for DoW. One of the best RTS series ever. CoH is also a good one as it plays similarly to DoW.

A lesser known one I found entertaining was Heritage of Kings: The Settlers... it reminded me a little bit of Civilizations II. There's a demo available for it if you do a little hunting.

I got in on the RoN deal at GoGamer.com for $5 shipped a while back, probably should give it a whirl.

I would have mentioned Dawn of War, as I believe it is an excellent game, but the OP specifically stated that he wanted to avoid futuristic RPGs.

I think that's an unfair accusation... They all play differently. Of course, diversity would be better if we had some more patches, but we're all waiting and playing a good game.

I spend most of the time in SupCom looking at icons, not my cup of tea. Not to mention my OS, this "3G" fix with my 4GB of ram still has not fixed continuous crashes.

I dont mind looking at icons if the gameplay is good, which they mostly fixed from the original. Also, I'm using Vista 64, so when I ever upgrade, the app is LargeAddressAware and can use 4GB of RAM. Too bad a 64-bit executable would be impractical... Imagine the unit limit then.

In this order Starcraft/Broodwars->Company of Heroes->Dawn of War (series)->Age of Empires II
If you want to take it even further for a fairly unique RTS, Myth I, II were awesome games.
Have not played Rise of Nations or Medieval Total War so can't comment on supposedly awesome RTS, they seem too large scaled for me. I prefer individual group or unit control; as opposed to huge armies.
