thanks alot...
anyways, i just got 2 10,000 rpm seagate cheetah hdd's and an adaptec scsi card.

i 1st installed the card, then installed 1 of the hdds while still booting from my old IDE drive...all went well and i ghosted my old IDE hdd to my new scsi hdd...all went well...i made my IDE drive UNbootable and booted up from my scsi drive...all was seeing cool...then i connected my other new scsi drive and went to boot up...no go...i tried messin around in the scsi utility but it wasnt recognizing either of the drives....so i disconnected the 2nd scsi drive and booted from the 1st again...so here i am...i took my ide drive right out (for the time being) and have only the 1 scsi drive connected...am i missing something?...there are 2 internal ports and 1 external and i only have 1 cable (internal) but it has 4 connectors, so the way it is right now, i have my 1 scsi drive connected to the last connector on the cable...i tried connecting the 2nd scsi drive to one of the other connectors on the cable but then i cant boot....any help would be super appreciated.

thanks a bunch

What model Adaptec scsi card?
What model Seagate hard drives?

Did you set the jumpers on the second drive so that it has a different ID?
By default, they probably have the same ID.

Does the cable have slightly large block at the end? That's the terminator if you've got one.

If you don't have a terminator, and you can't set termination by a jumper on one of the drives
you ought to get one

Make sure the connection is like this:

scsi card - hard drive - hard drive - terminator.

thanks for the reply man...

okay, where the cable goes into the card, there is (i think) a terminator (it's a black block)...then at the very end of the cable is my bootable cheetah ST3102LW U2SCSI 9.1 gig...then i tried putting the other formatted cheetah ST3103LW between the card and the bootable ST3102LW.

i just unhooked everything to make sure there wasnt a jumper at the front of the hdd set to terminate...there are no jumpers on the ST3103LW at all...just free pins, uncovered.

right now, with just the card, and the ST3102LW at the end of the cable it is good...on bootup it recognizes the hdd....but if i attach the ST3103LW to the cable between the card and the controller it just sits at: ID00 ID01 on bootup.....then if i go into the config util it shows empty slots (no name or discription for either of the hdd's) for both ID01 and ID02...

thanks for the help...i just gotta make the middle drive not terminate right?...but wouldnt no jumpers meen no terminate?

thanks again (full scsi rookie here!)

The terminator end should be after the last hard drive, it should not be near the end that goes into the SCSI controller.

Look on the back and on the bottom of the drive for the jumper settings. No jumpers at all is also a setting.

As to the drives terminating, it depends on what drives you have. Those seem to be newer ones , so they should not be terminated. (I'll see if I can get a specs page from seagate) The only termination should be by the terminator block.

Also, have you been inside your SCSI card bios? Make sure it's using default settings(which should include auto termination, which terminates things on the scsi card's end.)
