I have to get Microsoft office next year. Does anyone know whether Microsoft plans to release a new version between now and next year?

Thank you, that is exactly what I needed to know. Now I know I can wait till right before the school year. But now i have another problem lol. I looked of the Microsoft site. I was interested in the Student Edition, but they say that technically it is "illegal" to use if you're K-12 or above. And I need it for K-12 next year. This ticks me off! $140 I can underestand. But forcing me to pay $400 for the Standard Edition which has the exact same stuff????? gRRRRRRRRRRR.

AFIAK, there's the educational version which is for college students and then there's the Students and Teachers version which is for K-12 students and teachers.

If you're going into college, check what kind of deals you can get on campus.

Most of the new versions offer the same features as the older versions. I got Office 2003 through work.

Word Excel and Publisher has not seen much improvement since Office 97 but Outlook, Access, Powerpoint, Frontpage have improved alot since Office 97.

Open Office is great and wonderful, but I would not say it offers that percentage of MS Office's features. I used it for a while, but it just got too annoying having to make sure what I was viewing was what the sender actually sent. It also doesn't do powerpoint slides too well.

Maybe it got lots better in 2.0?

From the article:
No matter what Microsoft throws into Office 12, the company faces an up-hill task persuading users happy with older versions of Office to upgrade. Office 97 accounts for 30 per cent of the customer base, according to analysts. Customers are happy that Office 97 provides them with the level of functionality need to simply get their job done, without the need for advanced collaboration capabilities so beloved by Gates and found in later versions of Office.

I still use Office2k. I couldn't stand OfficeXP for some number of reasons.
And my dad still likes Office97 too. If the current software gets the job done, it is quite tough to justify paying a few hundred dollars for something that offers little additional utility.

Heh, yeah - until Office 12 comes out, then Open Office will be "broken" again.
Maybe I'll have to give Open Office a shot though.

well for the money you can potentially save by not buying MS Office, Open Office is worth a try.

it may not work great on some areas, BUT for all the basic stuff its good enough to handle the day to day school work (read/make docs, spreadsheets , and slideshows)

I agree.

It depends on what you're doing doing with this software. If you want perfect interoperability with the outside world, OO is not for you. If you want certain advanced features, OO is not for you.

I appreciate that you put the word broken in quotes, but I'm gonna rant anyways
I don't think anyone really believes that microsoft needs to change document formats from version to version, other than to make it difficult to use old versions. But at any rate, if O is "broken" by the changes, wouldn't every old version of Office also be "broken"? I mean, I knkow that's what ms wants, but people are still going to use the old versions. O is then a more compatible option, since you'll eventually get the compatibility for free.

Anyways, I think O's value is going to be not so much in it's ability to handle ms formats, but in the support for the OpenDocument format (and of course the same goes for all other projects that use it). A document format is not something that really needs to change that often and once customers realize that they can get a cheaper and simpler solution then something is going to have to change. Even if microsoft adopts it and produces the best solution, and every continues to use Office we'll all be better off.
