I've been rocking this Asus 460 card for a couple years or so, and while it is a great card, I want an upgrade and this card will go in my son's computer.

I've been so out of what's hot and what's not for a long time. I've owned both ATI and Nvidia and don't really have a preference. I want something in the $180-$240 price range and I'm using a slightly overclocked i5-2500k machine @ 3.4 ghz.

Based on that info, what would you recommend, if anything, that will be a big step up? My monitor will do 1600x1200 max resolution.

This is the card I decided to go with. But when I bought it not long ago it was $249.99. And it also comes with the EVGA backplate. Awesome card.

Considering you can get a 280X for about $50 more, I would not recommend going with a GTX 760. It's a great card, but it belongs in the sub $250 market.

A $205 Sapphire 270X would be my ideal recommendation as it is one of the best bang for the buck cards at the moment.

For a rough comparison of the relative GPU performance, go to:

looks like the 270x is good, but not that much better than my 460gtx.

If the 270x is the rebrand I am thinking of then it is probably faster than a gtx580 once over clocked. I think its quite a bit faster than your card.

It's actually a lot faster. At least 200% faster than your GTX 460, especially when you factor in better DX11 support, mantle, and more VRAM.

If there was actually new tech to recommend... Both companies have nothing but re-branded products from $175-375 currently... :whiste:

Silly if people to recommend the most performance in his price range. Ludicrous I tell you.

78x series is 2 years old and I can't bring myself to buy a card right now. Its like... as soon as new consoles came out (which we were waiting for for years) the video card market STOPPED advancing and prices just went up.

No, you should not buy a 270x when its just a 7870 but 60-70 dollars more than they were 6 months ago. Not unless you REALLY need a new card. Nvidia's 760 was probably the last decent deal when it was in the low 200's for a little while. Yeah based on what's available the 270x is a good value.... but its still much, much worse than what we had before and I thought computers were supposed to perform better for less with time?

I would go with a 270 (non-X) if you can find one under $200. 270x is the same thing just clocked a little higher.

The price difference between the two is currently around 10-15 bucks give or take. I'd rather spend an extra 10 bucks on a card with better cooling, and guaranteed higher performance right out of the box. All 270X's have two 6 pin power connectors, only some 270s have two, most of them have only one which limits their OC potential. Again, if the difference was 30 bucks, I would lean towards the 270 non X with two power connectors, but since it's only 10-15 bucks, 270X is clearly a better choice.
