Any Epson with an 'R' on it will do the job. I have an R200 that is still rolling after 2000-3000 CDs and DVDs.

I just bought a HP D5160 on sale at OfficeMax for $69.99.
I read great reviews on the printer and it is living up to them.
It has a photo paper tray, regular paper tray and CD/DVD tray.
I printed pics on the sample HP 5x7 paper and was blown away with the quality.
I bought it to print directly to DVDs of my in-laws old home movies I transferred to DVD.
It worked great.

The print cartidges are reasonably priced but I'm going to get a refill kit.

But the printing software that comes with it is problematic.
I ended up using Acoustica CD Label Maker because it supports this printer,
is easy to use and full featured.

So now I have three printers, a color laser, a multifunction inkjet and the D5160 for discs.

If you're talking about printing to DVDs that have a printable surface then the Epson printers are great for this. A friend of mine has showed me several of his prints and you can't even tell they're printed from a printer. It looks silk screened.

Some European Canons can print disks and some american market models can be easily modded to do it. Then there are the Primeras but those are mainly for duplication businesses - not for individuals.

I currently use both my IP5000 and MP780 to print directly onto printable DVDs.

What printer is he using? I have an R320 and it does look good, but not that good.

I'm pretty sure the D5160 isn't directly supported by the Accoustica software. I can't find any listing for it anywhere in the software.

Speaking of the D5160 though... it only seems to want to print with full-face media. I have a stack of the regular printable DVDs as well, and it just prints right over the plastic n the middle.

I've also got an Epson R200 and really like it. I've printed many many CD's & DVD's.
Since it has six individual ink cartridges, I get refills off ebay.
The best deal I got was $38 for 24 (18ml) catridges. Normal fills are 13ml, but I've seen up to 20ml refills for sale. I was happy with my 18's for the price.

Actually, I just found out that Acoustica released an update around the middle of December in whihc the D5160 (amongst numerous others) are now supported. While I did like the color a bit better on the Epson R260 I used to have, it had a litany of problems, includinging giving errors every third disk or so that required a printer restart (at which point it sucked up 20% of the ink to re-prime the heads). The D5160 worked great now that I have that Acoustica software update. I'm going to see how the prints look using the photo ink next.

I got my r220 for about 80 bucks, and the ink is cheap.

Works great... except for a few minor nuances.

I also have an Epson R200 that I'm very pleased with.

...BUT be warned! The vast majority of the "inkjet printable" CDs/DVDs on the market are NOT glossy and therefore won't give you that 'punch' like you'd see on the professionally done blanks.

Even so, I'm still happy with mine!
