My wife just cracked the tank on our toilet. I know what is needed to be done to replace a toilet and since we have another bathroom downstairs, I'll install a new toilet tomorrow. My simple question is: what toilet is a decent one to buy at a Lowes or Home Depot? Or, is it worth going to a local plumbing supply place like Blackman Plumbing (http://www.blackman.com)? FWIW: when I redid my bathroom, a long while ago, we kept our non-water saving toilet because my plumber suggested that I wouldn't be happy with one of the water saving toilets. Now, I need to buy one and I figured that I'd ask which is a good one that is available 'off the shelf'.

FWIW: I try not to buy things from Home Depot because I find a lot of things to be sub-par in quality. Yes, you can buy a Weber grill at HD, but it does not include the stainless burner that you'd get if you bought it elsewhere. You can buy a Moen faucet at HD, but the valve is plastic instead of brass if you bought it at a plumbing supply place. So, I figured I'd ask about a toilet because I don't want to mess with things once they after they are 'done'.

Drive to Canada and get one of those illegal ones.

use one of those beer cooler chairs red green makes with duck tape?

(honestly thought red green made a toilet chair, then i remembered it was a beer cooler chair)

If you want a toilet that will work, skip Home Depot and Lowes as you suggest and go to a plumbing supply house. The blackman plumbing link did not open for me, anyway the toilet I would get is the Toto Drake. Great bowl, 1.6 gallons per flush, never clogs. I have 2 in my house.

If you go to HD or Lowe's, they have little charts next to each toilet. You want whatever has the most power (HD has a 1-10 scale). It will cost more (200ish), but how often do you replace a toilet?

Also, almost everything is in the box, except the supply line (you can reuse your old one). I'd also recommend clear silicone caulking. Matching a color is a pain.

I needed a new toilet in a hurry and the budget was tight. This one had great reviews so I took a chance. I've been very happy with it.
My old toilet was from the 80s, however many gallons they used back then. I was very skeptical that 1.28 gallons would do the job, especially on a low dollar model. It's done just fine. Maybe once in six months have I needed to give it a second flush.
The only concern in the reviews was the seat. It's plain, but it's held up well, and I'm a big guy. I've found no reason to replace it.

Everyone loves to slobber on the knob of Toto's but keep in mind most end up coming from some cheap crappy low end model - which Toto really doesn't make. So they have a $60 American Standard or Kohler toilet and go to a $250 (or even $400) Toto and think its a revolution in toilets.

There certainly isn't anything wrong with Totos as a brand but you can get the same quality in the same price range or often less with the larger brands. The benefit of the larger brands like Kohler or AS is availability of quality parts. For example in my area the nearest Toto supplier is 2 hours away while I can get parts for a Kohler or AS pretty much anywhere. I do also know that Totos have had part supply issues in the past that resulted in very long lead times.

Another benefit of Kohler is that they glaze all of the internal traps of their toilets while Toto does not. They also have a larger line of high (1000) MAP rated toilets. A good alternative to look at besides Toto would be the Kohler Cimaron line.

We just replaced three in our house. We had a tank crack in the middle of the night at 2:30 in the morning, water everywhere... anyhow...

Because all three were the same age we decided to switch out all three. I picked up a not cheap Kohler from Lowes to switch out with the broken one, and my wife and kids hated the thing and Lowes took it back.

I ended spending way too much time devoted to picking out toilets, and ended up paying more than I thought I would. We put in three American Standard Flowise oval, hidden trap one piece models. The hidden trap is nice, looks better and is easier to clean around, and the one piece aside from costing more, looks better and takes another leak point out of the toilet.

My local hardware stores didn't carry them, but I have Amazon Prime and they shipped for free and I had them in two days. I think my orders are probably why Amazon is raising the Amazon Prime fees, haha.
