Everyone knows that how bad you need a toilet is directly proportional to how close you get to one.

How much of a hurry are we talking about OP? Do you have some monster timber heading to the saw mill? Or is it more like you could shit through a screen door and not hit a wire?

Details plz

We've replaced both of ours in the last few years - an American Standard upstairs (don't remember the model but it was around $250 at Home Depot so not super cheap), and a Toto Drake II downstairs. I do prefer the Toto (the cyclone flush does seem to work a little better), but both have been good toilets.

The Toto was like $350 with Amazon Prime when I got it, but the cheapest I could find it locally was closer to $450 (Chicago area), so the concerns mentioned above about availability are probably worth your consideration.

Everyone loves to slobber on the knob of Toto's but keep in mind most end up coming from some cheap crappy low end model - which Toto really doesn't make. So they have a $60 American Standard or Kohler toilet and go to a $250 (or even $400) Toto and think its a revolution in toilets.

There certainly isn't anything wrong with Totos as a brand but you can get the same quality in the same price range or often less with the larger brands. The benefit of the larger brands like Kohler or AS is availability of quality parts. For example in my area the nearest Toto supplier is 2 hours away while I can get parts for a Kohler or AS pretty much anywhere. I do also know that Totos have had part supply issues in the past that resulted in very long lead times.

Another benefit of Kohler is that they glaze all of the internal traps of their toilets while Toto does not. They also have a larger line of high (1000) MAP rated toilets. A good alternative to look at besides Toto would be the Kohler Cimaron line.
? We have both Toto and Kohler in my house. The Totos in general were cheaper than the good Kohlers, and a Toto dealer was just up the street. I'm in Toronto though.

I also have other Kohler fixtures in the house, and it's a pain because the local plumbers don't keep Kohler parts on hand either. For my toilet, I had to use aftermarket third party parts because it would have meant a few day wait otherwise, and for my shower the plumber I got didn't even know how to fix it. Finally I called another plumber and he came himself (after getting the part) because he said his employees don't know how to fix Kohler products either.

Toto Drake comfort height elongated bowl
Toto Drake regular height elongated bowl is my recommendation in that line, for most people at least.

I don't like comfort height toilets, but then again I'm not 75 years old or 6'5". Unless you're super tall, the main advantage of comfort height toilets is that it's easier for seniors with mobility problems to sit on and get up from.

My vote is Toto Drake as well. Had it around six months and it's a world of difference from the cheap stuff. Certainly something I never thought I'd order from Amazon, gotta love Prime. Also highly recommend getting the coating, it really does cut done on the cleaning.

Another vote for Toto Drake. Id recommend the original Drake, not the newer Drake II. I have both and the original is 1.6 GPF versus the Drake II which is 1.28 GPF. The Drake II has the "Double Cyclone" flush which is supposed to be better than the original which kind of just sucks everything down but the extra water of the original Drake is more helpful IMO. The Drake II is good, I have never clogged either toilet, but IMO the original Drake is the better of the two. Ive dropped many large bombs in both but the original tends to clean away shit spray better, when you have the explosive type of shits.

Get it with the Sanagloss finish as well.

Take the Toto handle out of your mouth so you can speak clearly

I'm in Toronto though.

Well thats why - Canadians are always screwed up I am sure availability is different for different areas but Kohler has a far far larger manufacturing and distribution system than Toto so you are much less likely to run into a parts issue with Kohler.

FWIW when I worked in Architecture we shied away from specifying anything other than Kohlers and a very close friend runs a large plumbing shop that also prefers to install and work with Kohlers.

Still both are better than the cheap builder grade models like the Mansfield 160 that still terrorizes homeowners so you can't really go wrong either way (unless you get a manufacturing defect)

Those never clog toilets do in fact clog and when they do, their design make it a PITA to unclog. NEVER BUY ONE!

Regarding comfort height or ADA toilets, I suggest you go to the store and check them out. Go and sit on one for a few minutes. Personally I find comfort height / ADA toilets uncomfortable. Too tall.

Well, regarding higher end Kohler fixtures (not toilets), my plumber said it's often a parts issue with them because a lot of their higher end products use different internal designs so often it's too expensive to keep the parts on the truck. You have to go to the plumbing supply shop to pick up the parts, and hope they have them in stock. If they don't you can usually get the stuff in a few days, but with the cheaper brands (not Toto), they always have the stuff and it's often right on the truck, partially because they tend to conserve their internal designs more often for simplicity's sake so there are fewer parts to stock. And the higher end Kohler stuff is sometimes unusual enough that many inexperienced but licenced plumbers won't know how to troubleshoot them. I wonder how different it is in the US. Does Kohler target both the lower end markets and the higher end markets there? It seems in Canada Kohler's market is more upper mid-end to high end.

BTW, I have one bathroom with Nicolazzi fixtures. That is an even bigger PITA.

We had two Kohler comfort height elongated bowl toilets; I broke one during the remodel, and mistakenly tried an American Standard instead.
It did not go together as well, does not flush as well as the Kohler.

In a hurry? To me, that means you should just visit your local Lowes or Home Depot and buy one thats sitting on the shelf.

If you want a toilet that will work, skip Home Depot and Lowes as you suggest and go to a plumbing supply house. The blackman plumbing link did not open for me, anyway the toilet I would get is the Toto Drake. Great bowl, 1.6 gallons per flush, never clogs. I have 2 in my house.

Thanks for the helpful and the humorous replies.

I ordered a Toto Drake (not II) elongated bowl with Sanagloss from Amazon (my daughter has Prime). Here is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012HBQK8/ref=pe_385040_30332200_pe_309540_26725410_item

I don't think I would have found this toilet if it wasn't for you guys, so I thank you.

A quick question for people who own a Toto: How do the seats hold up? I'm wondering if those 'slow close' seats are of a different design and hard to find locally. So, I'm wondering if I should buy an extra one to have on hand. Frankly, I can't imagine the seat failing completely that I'd need to have one to swap on right away, but I figured that I'd ask.

Also, is there any difference in mounting this toilet? A co-worker told me that he bought a Toto and he ended up selling it rather than modifying his bathroom. But, he thinks his was a peculiar case. So, I figured that I'd ask.

Make sure the new toilet will fit your space. To do this, measure the rough-in size. This is the distance between the wall behind the toilet and the center of the drainpipe or the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. It’s best to perform this measurement before you remove the old toilet.
Measure from the wall behind the toilet to the center of one of the closet bolts (that hold the toilet down). If the toilet has four closet bolts, measure to the center of one of the rear ones. Measure from the center of the mounting holes to the back of the new toilet you're considering. Compare these two measurements. If the base of the new toilet is shorter than the distance between the rear bolt holes and the wall, it should fit. In small bathrooms where space is tight, also measure from the sides of the flange bolts to the sidewalls or other objects to assure side-to-side clearance.
The standard rough-in is 12-in, though you may encounter 10-in and 14-in rough-ins in older homes. You should find the rough-in measurement in the new toilet’s product information
.

This may be what he ran into. An older home with a 10" rough-in could be a problem.
