1and1 didn't let me preview the website before transferring my domain name.
Godaddy froze my account because I didn't give them my home address.
I tried another (hostgator?) and it had a 50MB limit for MySQL databases.
Amazon was supposed to be free for a certain amount of data, but I was getting billed like $100 a month before the site even went live.

Are there any decent web hosts without weird surprises?

What are you willing to pay? I use a smaller host named Rochen and they've been extremely good. For $12.95/mo I get a very fast box, ssh access, a bunch of other features, and excellent support when I need it. The main reason I use them, though, is the performance, which is just outstanding for a small hosting plan. If you want to see how they perform w/wordpress click the "meaningless scribbling" link in my sig.

What everyone else said about madgenius. Been using them for over a year now and they've been rock solid.

Been using madgenius for a few years and vivi's hosting pretty much since it launched, never any big issues with them and the pricing is good.

I've also used A Small Orange and have set up a VPS on RamNode, and both are very good as well.

I love digitalocean. VPN at a very good price (10$ a month for 1gb memory)

I used DigitalOcean before for primecoin mining (not anymore, since it's not profitable) and I was pretty impressed with their options and how easy it was to deploy VPS/VMs. Their interface is nice and clean, too, very easy to use.

PM me. I work for a Top Tier hosting company in St. Louis, and we're getting pretty aggressive with pricing. We're not a budget hosting company, so we can't compete on pricing with big corporate outfits, but we're dedicated, been in business for nearly 20 years, fully manage our own DC, are SOCII certified, and offer great support. We offer shared hosting, cPanel accounts, virtual servers (vmWare, Xen, HyperV), dedicated servers, blades, colocation, etc.

There certainly are, the trick is finding a reputable host without paying Rackspace.com prices.

What's your realistic budget, need a firm number not a range?

How much disk space and bandwidth per month do you need?

If you can host multiple domains using a single hosting account, would that be appealing to you?

I'm looking at one of the $10 plans. Not looking to pay a lot since the site isn't live yet. A lot of places boast "unlimited" bandwidth and data. I plan to use hundreds of gigs of bandwidth at least. My MySQL database is 10GB right now. All of these numbers will get bigger as time goes on.

I need multiple domain names, subdomains, and an SSL certificate.

ah thats a good amount of disk space. digitalocean only gives 30GB disk space for the 10$ plan, and 2TB transfer.

if they didnt use SSDs it would probably be more space, but i dunno of any low cost VM providers with better storage at that price.

i checked linode, they came down in price but still not as much drive space as digitalocean. and looks like prgmr isn't competitive anymore unfortunately.

100's of gigs of bandwidth is a commercial site.
