most VPS vendors give a TB or 2 transfer for a cheap price, assumingly since most clients will not come anywhere close

Well add on his other requirements and I don't think he is going to find a cheap host (multiple domains, VPN's, etc).

both linode and digitalocean give 2TB for 10$ a month

I am willing to bet when one is approaching those limits regularly, you will get a call to bump up.

I am thinking this is a typical "looking for something I will never really grow into" thing and any cheap host will work out fine.

I like AWS, esp that it's free for the first year.

I was with silvers.net for over 10 years, I just never had a reason to switch, even when I got my own dedicated server for my game server I never moved the sites to it right away. Only recently did I migrate everything together as I kept going over my bandwidth limit. 100GB goes fast, just from search bots alone.

Though I'd try out madgenius hosting now given it's run by Vivi from here.

If you are patient you can also snag a cheap dedicated server from http://www.soyoustart.com but you pretty much have to go hit refresh every couple hours every day and hope one becomes available. I got lucky and recently got one. You can't bean ~$50/mo for a dedicated server. I think it's unlimited bandwidth too. Though I guess it's one of those where if you're clearly abusing it they'll probably shut you down. Typically there is a catch when they don't limit it.

1and1 didn't let me preview the website before transferring my domain name.
Godaddy froze my account because I didn't give them my home address.
I tried another (hostgator?) and it had a 50MB limit for MySQL databases.
Amazon was supposed to be free for a certain amount of data, but I was getting billed like $100 a month before the site even went live.

Are there any decent web hosts without weird surprises?

Why didn't you want to give Godaddy your home address?

I'm looking at one of the $10 plans. Not looking to pay a lot since the site isn't live yet. A lot of places boast "unlimited" bandwidth and data. I plan to use hundreds of gigs of bandwidth at least. My MySQL database is 10GB right now. All of these numbers will get bigger as time goes on.

I need multiple domain names, subdomains, and an SSL certificate.

Best of luck.

interesting that as this thread is on the main page here at ATOT, my site hosted by madgenius has been down for about 30 minutes now. it went down last week for a period of time as well. but i've been using him for probably 2 years now and never once had personally seen it go down, but i don't use the site myself it's for a customer. but they have never mentioned it other than last week, but when i checked after i saw the message after getting off an airplane, it was working again.

same, don't think its ever gone down for anything besides scheduled maintenance and such

Well that's out the window. I had moved to them in August.

The server drives completely crashed. Nothing recoverable.

Looking for my fourth host this year.

I'm so tired of web hosts.

Price or quality, you can only choose one. You get what you pay for.

I use mddhosting. Solid for the last couple months. Very fast responses to any issues and every issue I brought to their attention so far has been my fault.

I've had many issues w/ madgenius to the point where I moved elsewhere. Lots of downtime, poor attitude, slow response and lack of explanations.

I personally like Vivi, but I think he has a regular 9-to-5'er and this is just some little pet project that he doesn't pay professional attention too.

Been going up in cost with each move. That's not helping.

DigitalOcean @ $5/month is Your Best Bet (as mentioned by brianmanahan)

You're not going to get better than that if you want reliability and performance. If you're struggling with 512MB of ram you can easily bump it to $10, even if you need it just for a day... you'll only pay extra for that day.

I personally have been using Linode.com for the last 5 years and am very happy with them. Digital Ocean is a better deal below $10 but you get more space with Linode at the $20 level.

I'd suggest Madgenius, but apparently you might have already tried that provider. I personally love the service and have suggested several clients to purchase webhosting from that host.
