It can often be done without the grounding strap, but it is simply a precaution for removing static electricity that can possibly be generated by your body and clothing. It is somewhat analogous to using a seatbelt in your car. It is a safety device for a worst case event.

They cost a whole $1.99 or so, and I bought one ages so, so I use it.

You are usually fine just touching something grounded before working and after moving around, but $1.99 is cheap insurance.

I usually just occasionally touch the chassis while I'm working inside the case. It's not hard to do, and you're likely to do it anyway out of necessity.

This. The only time I actually use a ground strap & anti-static mat is when I am actually building a new machine. When adding RAM, hard drive, etc, I just touch metal case with my left hand.

I never use them. I usually touch my computer desk to discharge any static.

I had this dilemma recently as well. I wasn't sure if I could use my chassis to ground myself because it's painted black. Also, I read all these alarming articles saying that while shorting may not be initially visible, it could silently degrade performance over time. So I bought one and put it on my ankle. I bought it with a mat and grounded the mat to the grounding prong of a nearby outlet. Cheap insurance for the $1000 I just spent on computer parts (not including monitor, OS and other peripherals).

Now that my PC is built, I think I'll just keep my PC off, but plugged in, like others said.

16+ years building PCs and have never used one and have never damaged a component do to static. Use on if you need the "peace of mind" otherwise dont worry about it. Everything will be fine

It's still safe and easy to do, though I'm guilty of just touching the case to do things a lot myself.

ESD can do things even at minor levels to things.

And I keep meaning to ask, did you used to work at Honeywell in Clearwater Corky?

I used to work with an engineer there years back that was named Corky who looked similar, and as they have things in Tucson these days though I would.

On static-y days I like to have the PSU plugged into a grounded outlet and switched off while building. This goes against safety advice for humans, but it helps protect the parts because there is a sure path to ground.

I've never used one. Not on any kind of components. I've built dozens of desktops, added/removed components from hundreds of servers and laptops and I've never once used a static strap.

Honestly I understand why, but in practice I've never heard of anyone who's had problems from not using a strap.
