Stemming from a discussion on another forum....

Edit: No, this is not a trick question in any way.

Let's say you are stopped at a (red) stop light and you have a radar detector mounted in plain view on your windshield. Radar detectors are legal in your state.

A police car pulls up and stops behind you and the officer activates his radar, thereby setting off your radar detector.

Do you think that he is trying to intimidate you into running the red light?

Registration required, but here's a link if anyone wants to see the thread.

No. What a retard. But I like cops and not "scared" of them. YMMV.

How big of a fucktard would a driver have to be to run a red light just because a cop tripped the radar detector?

I'd think that maybe the cop was fucking with me by doing so, I certainly wouldn't run the light because of it...not even if radar detectors were illegal. (better to just get the ticket for the illegal radar detector than also getting one for the red light violation and maybe be charged with attempting to flee.

WTF?? is this a 1+1=9 type discussion?

How do you make the jump from "turn on radar" to "RUN THE RED LIGHT"???

it does not compute.

Maybe the cop turned on his Radar to.. you know... see if you pull out doing 90... or maybe he was trying to clock someone else?

I mute my detector if that happens. I'm not sure how you get "run red light" out of that situation :^/

trick question?

Not at all, sadly.

Wait, what?

Tell me about it.

Here's the post in question (emphasis mine):

Another time about 8 years ago I was stopped at a traffic light when I was in my 300ZX. A cop pulled up behind me and turned his radar gun on full-blast, setting off my radar detector. He was trying to intimidate me into running the light. Instead, when the light changed, I went on through the intersection, but he pulled me over anyway. When I asked him why he stopped me he said my car matched the description of a car seen speeding a couple of miles away. It probably was me, but he didn't see it and he had no probable cause to stop me -certainly had no reason to set my radar detecor off (ther are perfectly legal here). He was hoping I'd panic and try to run.

I don't get it either.

why the fuck would you run a red light because your radar detector is beeping. If I see a police officer around and my detector goes off, I just silence it and forget about it.

Also, how do you turn a radar gun on FULL BLAST?

So, does low setting detect your cars speed?

And high setting does what, destroy your car?

Apparently it's the "Fry radar detectors" setting?

The thing screamed for the whole time we were there at the light, maybe thirty seconds or so -I mean it was almost smoking the signal was so hot.

[...]

Zapping someone in a sports car stopped in front of you, frying his radar detector, is not what we want in law enforcement.

My fear of cops harassing me isn't as great as my fear of getting T-boned because I have some panic attack over a radar detector.

I do. Cops still widely use radar. CHP is starting to convert to laser, however, they still use rader. Laser gives you no reaction time unless the cop pulls the trigger when your 1+ mile away. Veil makes a coating you can put in your license plate and headlights that absorbs the laser and decreases the range to about 600 ft. So, if you have a radar detector like the Valentine One and Veil and are about a mile away, you may still have time to react.

Uhm... No?

I even stop when a light turns yellow, too, when I have enough stopping distance for myself. I don't give a shit if the guy behind me is too close, I hope he breaks his brakes, the wise and beautiful woman.

Don't let people dick with you.

Agreed. Keep the digital camera charged and take pictures. In my last accident I took pictures of the scene within a few minutes. It resulted in my deductible be waived and the insurance company taking care of me. I HATE it when the person behind drives to close to have adequate reaction time. They don't realize that their ego is less important than someone's safety.

MMMM, fried radar detector with mango salsa.
Seriously, he never admitted to running the light but he did hand in his mancard right there. What a drama queen.

Would I feel pressured or intimidated to run the light? No, because I'd just turn the friggin' radar detector off and wait the light out.

EDIT: Clicked the wrong option. Clicked "yes", but I meant to click "no".

You broke the streak! I knew I should've reversed the no/yes...
