Im moving into an apartment for a year which has Washer/Dryer hookups but the Apt landlords charge $35/mo to rent a washer/dryer... which comes out to $455 for my 13 month lease... so we're looking into buying a relatively cheap set and then selling it when we leave. Ive never bought a set before and have no idea where to get a good deal or if its possible to get a good deal.. anyone with experience know?

We're not looking for an expensive set, just something that does the job, say under $650 for the set but since the Hot Deal forum has basically taught me not to pay retail Im just wondering if there are any secret places to buy these things cheaper.

Thanks in advance!

Sears has a Kenmore washer for $249 and a Kenmore dryer for $239. Sometimes they offer 10% off if you open a Sears credit card, they also have deferred financing (0% until 2004 something like that), plus sometimes 10% off coupons and also energy efficient rebates as well.

Go to Sears.com click Appliances ---> Laundry Care or click Store Locator.

Also I have seen Lowe's Home Improvement and Home Depot coupons at local USPS offices (usually in the FREE moving brochures they have out).

10% of $550 = $55 a nice little chunk of savings.

Do those dryers actually dry very good? Or do they take like up to two times in order for them to get the clothes dry?

UGh.. ours take 2 hrs to dry. Makes doing laundry a big PITA. those darn apt size washer/dryers.

We have a newer (about 5 yrs old) Kenmore and it takes 45 minutes to dry a large load of heavy clothes (jeans, towels, shirts, skirts, etc.)

Ditto and Roger that one. Sears Kenmore all the way. If you don't have the cash, just open up a Sears account and charge them.

In the case of major appliances, charging is an OK thing to do. Now if I can just lay off the computer parts...

Also check out Samsclub. They have some good deals.

And also go to Lowes, Home depot, and worst case price match someone and get a better deal.

If you really want to save some cash, check out the ads in the newspaper. There are some really good deals there as a lot of peopel move and don't wnat to take it with them.

Hell if you are just getting something for temp usage check out garage sales and the local want ads for a used set. Often can find both for 100.00. Then you can use them and dump them when you are done.

A 10 year old Maytag will probably do better than a new base model Kenmore. IMHO

Ditto on the city/local classifieds, online boards, et al. My cousin was able to pick up a year old $200 Maytag set from a retiree couple moving to Florida. They even delivered it to him with their friend's truck.

"...we're looking into buying a relatively cheap set and then selling it when we leave."

Why sell them? Do you intend to be renting again? If not, buy for the duration. It's cheaper in the long run. Best bang for the buck I've come across:

Fisher & Paykel Ecosmart Washer
"America?s Most Energy Efficient Top Loading Washer"
  • Matches the performance of its front loading competition at half the price and half the moving parts! (That's my own personal review! )
Fisher & Paykel DE06/DG06 Dryer

check out the whirpool imperial series or frigidaire gallery...both good sets that are fairly low cost...and the places that sell them tend to dicker

I just saw a comerical for Sears. Apparently all home appliances are "on sale". You may be able to get an extra 10% by opening a Sears charge, and you can get no interest financing until 2004.

I would look into picking up a set used. Problem is that you never know when they are going to crap out on you, and you'll be left paying the repair bill.
