AMD CPU's have a higher IPC (instructions per clock) then Intel CPU's. This just means that the AMD CPU's do more work per clock cycle thus allowing the chip to run at a slower speed and put out the same kind of performance as a higher clocked CPU. There are advantages and disadvantages to this though because different applications will respond differently to more efficient lower clocks and less efficient higher clocks. The A64's definitely run cooler then Prescott cores so thats a big plus. HyperThreading is really nice if you plan on multitasking though. A single core A64 will choke if you try to run multiple CPU intensive tasks at once. If the system wont be a gaming rig then i would probably go with an Intel CPU w/ HyperThreading and if it will be primarily for gaming then go A64. You could also go with an AMD dual core X2 if you have the cash flow and it would give even better multitasking performance then HyperThreading.

Tell your dad to look at the benchmarks......

Also, if you want to trick your dad, you can say that AMD has special firewall that prevents people from going to porn sites and prevents spyware, malware from ever going into the system. Also, AMD 64 runs 2x as fast as 32 bit processors..

If gaming is off the table then any $399 Dell is probably good enough, and AMD is not really "better." So it runs a little cooler, the chip is often idling while reading e-mail and surfing anyway.

And it runs at the equivilent of a 2000MHz FSB.
So much faster than the lowly 800 FSB Intel has

For those tasks AMD would be a better choice as it would be cheaper while performing basically the same or beter in every task except for encoding.

No, but you multiply the FSB with the GHZ to get total speed. 2000 times 2000 is way more than 3800 times 1000 ! And then you multiply AMD by two since it runs faster than 32 bit! There you have it. AMD is twice as fast no matter how you look at things!

lol you might have a better chance if you bumped it down a bit. But what the heck, with something like that, your future-proofed for a while.

According to AMD.com:
Protect investments with a technically superior PC processor
The AMD Athlon 64 processor is the world?s most technically advanced PC processor and the first Windows-compatible 64-bit PC processor. Advanced technologies in the AMD Athlon 64 processor include:

* AMD64 technology which doubles the number of processor registers and dramatically increases the system memory addressability
* Enhanced multimedia instructions support including 3DNow! Professional technology and SSE2/3
* With up to a 2000 MHz system bus using HyperTransport technology with up to 14.4 GB/sec total processor-to-system bandwidth
* An integrated memory controller with peak memory bandwidth of up to 6.4 GB/sec, supporting PC3200, PC2700, PC2100, or PC1600 DDR SDRAM
* Native execution of 32-bit software, allowing today?s PC software to provide leading-edge performance while enabling a seamless migration to 64-bit software

It's 1000x2

Intel's P4's FSB = 400MHz, 533 MHz, 800MHz, or 1066MHz.

Not 1000MHz...or did you mean 1066MHz?

Engines make a good analogy for dads V8 versus turbo 4, are peak RPMs the only thing to consider here, Dad?

Dual core > single core

But that's just my opinion on cpus in general.

As for AMD versus Intel.....well cooler > hotter. Plus, lower power draw too so more stable.
