Just look over the benchmarks for what you'll be using it for. Then do a price/performance breakdown.
I'm betting AMD will probably win.

As for the HTT thing, AMD claims 2000 MHz because the HTT bus is full duplex, so it can send two things (one from CPU to system, one from system to CPU) every clock cycle at 1000 MHz, so it's like it's running at 2000 MHz half-duplex (in theory).

And AMD is better than Intel for one simple reason...3 letters versus 5. It's an unbeatable advantage that Intel can never counter no matter how hard they try.

If it won't be used for anything heavy then you or your dad won't feel any difference between Intel and AMD at the keyboard. In that case I would support the idea to get a $399 Dell deal. Dells are designed to be quiet, too, although the cpu temp is probably something you wouldn't want to look at even if you could. They are, or were priority designs at one time and Prescotts aren't called PresscHOTTS for nothing.

On the plus side for AMD, don't overlook the processing power and Fox's post about cooler operating temps, lower current draw\operating cost in the long run and a ready built platform for Longhorn or Vista later on.

After it all washes out you have AMD as the best cooling with *strong* performance while running cool and using less electricity. You will also have a ready-togo upgrade path to Longhorn or Vista when the time comes.

If you build it, be sure to start with a SOLID power supply and work your way up from there. If you do it will be as solid as anything else out there.

AMD isn't necessarily better than Intel.

I went with AMD becasue gaming is the most intense thing i do with my computer. On the other hand, my Dad does no intense gaming (Warcraft III is the newest game he plays), but does serious multitasking, and a decent amount of video editing - so for him Intel wins.

AMD(V10) generates more horsepower with less RPM's(MHZ) than Intel(6cyl)

Just let him win. Get a Pentium D 820, or if it's an option (price) that nice shiny new X2 3800+. If you're not gaming, though, the Pentium D will be an excellent multitasker.

However, if you're set on AMD, here's a basic rundown of AMD's advantages (in the most basic terms I can put them into)
AMD CPUs...
- run cooler and use less power
- perform almost all tasks faster than Intel's offerings (except in multitasking situations, as already pointed out)
- access memory faster
- Can process 64 bit code along with 32 bit code and the like (some higher end Intel CPUs can do this as well)
- all recent generation parts use the same motherboards (except mobile CPUs, but they matter little), so they're a better upgrade path (though AMD IS changing sockets next year, they won't phase out Socket 939 for some time yet.) Intel uses different motherboards and chipsets for single and dual cores, so if you buy a single core now and want a dual core later you have to buy a new motherboard as well.

This isn't to say Intel has nothing going for it. Their dual cores are much more attractively priced (though AMD's new X2 3800+ helps to negate that advantage, it's still quite a bit more expensive than a Pentium D 820) and their mobile CPUs completely own AMD's in terms of performance and thermal properties.

Another arguement. Say with AMD you can use the computer if you have broadband, but intel will only allow you to use Dial up.

Just tell him that it will run just as fast, generate less heat (keep the A/C bills lower), and comsume less power (keep the electricity bill lower).

And if he's still not convinced to use an AMD machine, then just drop the whole subject, it's not worth an endless debate, both products get the job done, and in the end, that is the bottom line for most people.

If your dad is the type of person who just wants a machine he can rely on & trust and not have to think about, then just get him the intel machine and be done with it.

Intel P4's are the chips with the Netburst architecture... they're supposed to make the internet go bye-bye

Anyway, on topic, if you want to get an AMD chip, keep it reasonable. Maybe show your dad a link to a Sempron 2800+ for ~$80 and then show him that a P4 2.8 costs a lot more. Hopefully he knows that the Celeron D 2.8 (if there is one) is a good amount slower than either.

Intel's dual core chipsets, the 945 and 955, are backwards compatible with single core processors. So anyone buying Intel today should get a 945 or 955. Also, the $100 gap between the Pentium D 820 and the X2 3800+ is narrowed by the fact that a 945 board will run you about $40-$50 more than an nforce 4 939 board, so the price difference is only about $50-$60 in the end.

Of course, parents can be irrational when it comes to computers. My friend had to get a Pentium 4/ Nvidia 5200 (versus a higher end ATI) just because his father works with them at his job. Of course, ATI and AMD (huge corporations) are not trustworthy.

Well to convince a father goto any site that has made powerconsumption cmoparisons.

Its easy to find that form comparable top of the line CPUs AMDs consumes alot less power. A figure (here) would be about 200?/yr and if U have to cool the surroundings down with an AC then U can add another 200?/yr. = about 500$ per year. Assuming that U have it on 24/7 and that its on full load all the time.

I wouldn't use this one... 3.0L V10 F1 @ 18500rpm = 850 HP VS 1.5L V6 Turbo F1 @ 14000rpm = 1150 HP.

Cooler? Does not matter if it is within design specs and a pointless argument to an engineer. OMG, more heat... ok, not thermally efficient, but neither is a gas engine with the pedal to the floor

It is OK for you to like AMD and your dad to prefer Intel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Now if you were trying to argue how much faster you could do things with a Transmeta, then you/he need some work... If it is speed that is causing the issue, either dual core catches dual Xeons and even Opterons, so go with the bargin as they do not eclipse each other until you start spending lots of bucks for multiple CPUS (and you don't need that at home anyway except for e-penis elite status - quad opteron dual core = John Holmes.)

AMD commits less Anti competitive tatics then Intel. Intel wants to stop useing the exact core design they have been telling everyone to get for the last 3 years. The P4 is hotter then the Althon64. Althon64's are both "Cool n Quiet". In Formula One AMD Sponsors Ferrari while Intel Sponsor Toyota, who do think has a better advertisment? AMD Sponsors Lance Armstrong. AMD has a firm control in almost every benchmark but some encoding. Intel sells a Compiler that won't run any special instructions like SSE and MMX if it doesn't detect a Guinuine Intel when the ampplication is run. While AMD is going to swith sockets next year, you still have a more unlikely chance to be force to upgrade your mobo when upgrading cpus. No DRM (yet). More Pins means better CPU right? Hyperthreading is only useful because windows absolutely sucks when it comes to thread management and even then can slow down some programs. Basically if you make windows think their are 2 CPUs when their is only one Hyperthreading will take away cycles from one process to give them to the other process which might have a lower priority. AMDs TCO is lower then Intel all levels of performance on thedesktop. For example Intel Might sell Cheaper Dual Core CPUs but the only chipsets the sell are 50-75 more then a Nforce 4 Ultra or VIA based board for AMD. They also Use DDR2 (which even though it is 2 isn't always better) Which costs more then DDR and due to its higher latancey you won't want to use it now anyways (next year around the time of the M2 release they should have better versions) you Have to purchase a PCI-E vid card for Intel not so with AMD (you want PCI-E but AMD at least gives people a choice this was a big deal for AIW owners) which can be anywere from 10-50 dollars more. By the time your finished you would have spent the same if not more building a full Intel Dual Core machine (which destroys the percieved cost effectivness of the 820) plus for the engery nuts out their the AMD rig would use less power and save you some peanuts on the next and future electricity bills. AMD has a memory Controller on board Whcich allows the A64 to talk directly to the memory with little latency. For the second most important part in your system the P4 has to talk through the Northbride (or chipset) better for talking to the memory.

AMD is the R0x0r
Intel is the Sux0r

Why do you want to argue with him about it??

If you get AMD and something breaks, guess what gets blamed.
If you get intel then you're not on the hook.
