I suggest you start by using the security features of Windows itself to their full advantage, and some best practices you can do to help. http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security2.html

Once the foundation is in place, then you start building the house

Oh, and don't turn off UAC on Vista.

After following mech's advice and setting your system up to be difficult to attack I would recommend a goon proactive A/V there are several good choices, paid, Norton Internet Security 2009 new and very light on your system included a firewall, Kaspersky is another popular and high rated choice, Free, I would go with Antivir or Avast. AVG used to be ok but it getting a bit bloated in the newest version. For antispyware superantispyware free or Malwarebytes free, update and run them manually (I usualy run mine the first of every month) or pay for either and they will run full time. Most important is it to never download anything you are not 100% sure is safe, if you use torrents your odds of getting a nasty go way up.

Great advice!

i would also recommend Kaspersky, it's solid and very highly rated by AV Comparatives testing.

Enable Windows Update, keep it up to date! <--- single most important step!!!

Enable Windows Firewall.

If you want a free AV, use avast! or AVG.

NoScript for Firefox also seems to work really well.

Ok not trying to flame anyone but i wouldn't use AVG defiantly the worst AV program. If you had to go free i would pick Avira. If you want the best i would say Eset nod32, follow be kaspersky. So far the results i got from my own custom scans on this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=76&threadid=2243629 . I am currently doing default scans then i will be doing max setting scans. Resources is physical memory use in KB. Another note since these are all fresh installs system has little (~10) cookies and all programs are internet security Suites.
