i am going to college next yr and i need laptop that can play games and doesnt cost too much over $1800

im looking at dell.com

a 2.4ghzwuxga with 512 ram and 64mb geforce4 4200 cost about $1720

which int bad at all

but my concern is will this laptop play star wars galaxies, and later; deus ex 2?

if not,m where should i shop formy laptopto hopefully find a better video card, sincethats the best on dell offers...

graphics dont have to be maxed, ijust want the game to run.

i looke at alienware.com and theyre too expensie for a negligible improvement.

is this video card from dell okay or should i look elsehere

btw, i need to get this soon so i have it in time for college

generally, if you wait till you actually need it in your paws, you'll get more bang for your buck...meaning your videocard will probably be better. i'd wait till radeon 9600 is it? comes out for mobile...and that will make the other things cheaper if it's too expensive for you...

remember you have to throw in tax and warrenty and shipping usually...

p.s.

is your name in reference to the band, "the stryder" if so, good job. : P

will you be actually using this laptop in classes and such? I discourage latop buying unless you actually will use it as a laptop. You just can't beat desktops for performance, price and upgradeability.

SO only bother getting a laptop if you think you will actually use it as one.

My thoughts exacto....

I once bought a laptop and packed it with the latest everything...n paid through my noses for it. I realised after 'bout a year (when the new graphics card aint so flash no more, when the casing ain't that shiny no more) that really, a desktop would have suffice.

This time round, i made sure I REALLY needed a laptop. And I configured my laptop to suit my real needs. Getting a laptop for playing games is really...umm....not a wise decision. When the Radeon 9600 does come out for lappys, is it really worth the 'arm n leg' that you would have to forgo to get that? In fact, if you tone down ur laptop specs - (wuxga??), you could prolly get a laptop and desktop - which you can upgrade

Get a laptop. when it comes time to move out, you will regret the amount of luggage you have to bring back home when school is done. A laptop makes moving in and out so much easier.

How about getting an used Thinkpad off ebay for ~$800 and spend the rest on a desktop system which would be better suited for gaming than a laptop.

That is a terrible reason to get a laptop. With all the extra crap you have to move out, are you even going to notice a little box?

Doubtful.

And workign on just a notebook is a pin for any normal users, so you still need to get teh Moniter, mouse, and keyboard, so you might as well have the desktop.

What you really should do is not spend any money at all on a laptop. See if you cant get a used one for cheap. I found best to do is get a little notebook ,that all it is good for is word and maybe IE. take your notes, and look up stuff on the web.

Don't try buyign a laptop with the ideas of gaming or heavy use in mind. It is just not worth it.

Why would your parents not let you take yoru desktop up? That sounds unreasonable.
