In the past year I have looked at and seen potential in about 5 very different career paths and as of right now I have no idea what I should do. From Engineering to Finance I have run the gamut pretty comprehensively.

If I have a talent for looking at a situation and finding the problems there within, what would I be good at? Consulting?

i think you should go consulting blamohammer.

Currently i'm CS and Management, I think the best route for me is consulting too, based on what others have said to me.

just do something that you enjoy doing

I went from a degree in English Lit to a career in IT, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Currently in school. Right now working towards a Business degree. I know it's an easy degree but after seeing so many people get a degree in X and then move onto a career in Y, I'm not putting too much stock into it anymore.

I am realy good with analyzing numbers and finding what needs to be done to improve. Accounting always seems to attract me but it seems like it has the potential to be a dull career although the possibility of working for myself is intriguing. Some sort of Financial Anylyst position seems likely. Who knows...I'm a helluva salesperson though

To get into IT is the degree more important or just having the proper certs and experience?

from everything I've seen, experience is more important than anything else. of the 15 people in my department, only 3 of us have 4 year degrees (myself included, and among us 3, only one of us has a degree in something IT-related).

I should talk to my cousin. Hes the IT manager at Delphi productions and his best friend is a manager at Ask Jeeves. Its not what you know, but who you know right?

I'm going to suggest you avoid a "carere" as an English teacher.

jk.

Don't worry about it too much man. Pick something, work hard at it, then switch if you don't like it.
You've got time.

Lol. No worries about that. I absolutely despise my English classes. Luckily I have a knack for putting my thoughts into words on paper so I do okay in them. I still HATE them though.

I couldn't agree more!

I spent 10+ years of my life as an auto mechanic. While the money was pretty good, I was quite miserable.

Spent a good chunk of a year learning microelectronics and semiconductors, and now have a job that I REALLY REALLY like.

My life is 100x better now that I actually enjoy what I do for a living. Even if they doubled my current salary, I wouldn't go back to my previous career.

that depends on if you actually have to.. you know.. work

expiernce is what you know, everybody hires based on that

i would be careful thinking that way, you might bite off more then you can chew and be fired faster then you thought

for me im always afraid of not being able to preform something for the business, when they assign you to do something and you have no idea how to do it, its a scary thing

Its not a question of OR.

Its a fact of what you know AND who you know?

If you are a dumbshit - knowing Bill Gates personally isnt going to get you far. And if you're the next would be Bill Gates but have never gone out of your basement your whole life - then you arent going to get anywhere either.

It has to be a balance. You have to be genuinely capable of doing the job - and you should know people above you in the food chain that are willing to take care of you.

To get into consulting, you need the experience and education. To be successful once into consulting, it's who knows you. Shake hands and networking are key. From my experience.

Certs and experience. Degrees don't really matter in IT unless you want to be in management. I don't have a degree, but I have certs, and I make more than most IT managers. Start small, A+, Network+ and work your way up. The Catch 22 is finding a job and getting experience. Start with your certs while you're still in school and you should be able to land a decent job when you graduate.

I've stayed on the same career path. It doesnt make much sense for me to turn around now, specially with a family to support. It doesnt surprise me though that you like to flip flop.... You don't seem to make commitments and stick with them.

Pick something that you enjoy doing more than any of the other options, even if it is not the thing at which you excel the most.

I chose programming because when I was younger it was a hobby that I enjoyed in my spare time, and I excelled at it. I should never have chosen it as a career, though. It is something that I don't like to do all the time, and I don't really like having a desk job because I like to stay active on my feet.

Agreed. I took my current coop b/c i loved electronics. I was going to deal and work with chips in the printers, moniters, scanners, digicams, cell phones, dvd players, it was like Best Buy without the sales pitch because i would get to try everything out and make everythign work. 4.5 months later, I hate this job. I just sit code, and test. I don't even want to go to an electronics store b/c chances are I am going to see a project i worked on and i will get all depressed b/c it will remind me how much I hate my job. I can't wait to go back to school.
