Just bought a neo drone Protocol, assuming smaller would be easier for a beginner.

Thing sucks. Wont stay in place, and the trim controls dont work worth a damn. It either shoots straight up or drops like a rock, the vertical throttle has no sweet spot. The alleged 6 degree gyro is shit, or the the little motors are not perfectly synced.

I need a basic quadra copter that can at least stay put while I figure out what to do next.

i think you're gonna have to spend more than $40 to get anything decent. I mean like several hundred dollars.
I'm not going to buy anything until battery life improves. I mean like an hour plus battery life.

If you want to play with the big boys at least an entry level phantom or build it yourself.

My phantom can hold reasonable position in a decent wind. No trim required.

Of course you're looking at a minimum of a couple of $100.

OK, obviously 40 bucks was too low. I will have to look at these brands and pick something decent.

If you decide to buy a Hubsan X4, let me know. I have some leftover parts from mine that I should get rid of.

Syma x5c if you want a quality small copter to fly indoors and/or at limited altitude outside (on calm days)

Blade QX 350 series if you want a more affordable larger quad that you can fly outdoors in most conditions (I have a QX2 and it is a lot of fun and was half the price of a DJI Phantom).

DJI Phantom series if you want a quad for aerial photography (much better gyroscopes, mount, and stock camera than the Blades - though the Blade manufacturers might have addressed that by now).

Good luck and have fun.

Is it cheaper to build than buy one premade?

As with all things, it depends. Primarily on the quality of the components that you choose.

FWIW - the name brand larger premade quads (DJI, Blade) are pretty good quality and you get quite a good value for your money. For example, the ready to fly Blade package provides a decent transmitter (retail seperate ~$150), the quad (bind and fly retail separate - $400), a gyro (retail separate $200), and an (admitted just ok) camera (retail separate - $300 for a decent go pro) for $800 (and they often go on sale for less). Total price for those components separately would be north of $1000
