I need to know the temps of your Northwood 1.6a's

The situation is that I have a one month old xp1800 on a 8KHA+ but am interested in the new intel setup. I know that there will not be a large improvement in performance but what I am interested in is lower temps. My current system sits at 42c with a alpha 8045 under normal use (surfing the web, etc) and maxes at 46c during heavy gaming.

I've seen some temps posted on the 1.6a's that seemed to good to be true so please help me decide what to do

Please post what MOBO your using, and type of cooling
Temp wise please post idle, max
and obviously what speed your running at (Im looking mainly for 2.1g though)

thanks a bunch

I used stock cooling (stock thermal pad) on my 1.6A with Asus P4B266 mobo, I have 2 intake fans, one directly above the CPU and one in the front of the case. I have 1 exhaust fan on the back of the case above the CPU and one PS exhaust fan. I am running at 2.25 Ghz at 1.5 Vcore, temps at idle are 33 C at load around 41 C.

With my watercooler, my "old" rig (as of yesterday....) was a 1ghz T-bird @ 1.40ghz. It idled at 25C and hit full load (Combination of Prime95 and CPUBurn4) around 43C. My new P4B266-C and 1.6A combo (currently at 2.272 ghz (142fsb)) is idling higher at 26C but has only hit 37C at full load being tested the same exact way. I kind of miss my room heater..............

One other thing to consider is that the T-birds core temps could of been much higher since that was measured with an external thermistor. (Socket and side-core)

All I know is at full load my blowhole use to pump out warm air and now it is barely tepid.

The new 1.6a's are fun to play with, but if I were you I would be hesitant about going to one. You are already running a very nice setup, and if you are just shooting for 2.1 I don't know how much of an improvement you would really see.

I have an Epox 8k7a with an XP 1.8 and a Swiftech mcxc370 cooler I run at 11.5 x 140 for 1610mz. My idle temps are at 21c ambient internal case temp.

Idle=30c
Load=37c

I'm thinking of going back to the northwood 1.6 like you are but on my second system which is a Ga-7dxr with a tbird 1.4. I dont think you'll see much difference with your rig in speed and your temps aren't that bad.

1.8A @ 2.25Ghz, retail HSF, ASIII, ANtec 1040 + 4 Panaflo L1A's.

Idle: 26-31C

Load: 42C Max with Prime95

Noise level: Very quiet.

I'm an AMD guy that is sick and tired of the noise that is a byproduct of the cooling required for these chips. I had a 1.4 Tbird (not OC'ed) with an Alpha PAL 8045+Sunon, 4 case fans (120mm Panaflo L1A, 92mm L1a, 2 x 80mm L1A's). Idle temp was 37-40C, Load was 45-49C.

I love my quiet, stable Intel rig!

1.6a OC'ed to 133 FSB and running at 1.7volts.
I just got it today, so I'm still using the stock heatsink/fan with AS II.
At full load, it runs at 56 C.
Idle temp is 42 C.

I'll be getting my Alpha PAL8942 in tomorrow, so I'll have some betting cooling and numbers then.

1.6A/P4S333 o/c to 2.3GHz with stock cooling at 1.55v
In BIOS idle is 31.5C (reboot from Windows after about 30mins on the web)
Load around 41C (again from a reboot to Bios after running Prime 95 & 3DMark in loop).

Regtalk - after a reboot is not really accurate. You temp probably drops by 10C after Shutdown/Restart and entering the bios. Use MBM 5 within Windows.

My sensor won't register temps below 40c, but I have to run the burn-in wizard in Sandra (cpu multimedia benchmark only) for 30 loops (about 10 minutes) just to get it to 41c and it drops back down to below 40c within 5 seconds after the test. Mobo temp shows 32c under load and 28c idle. I was worried that the sensor wasn't working initially, but when I placed my fingertips on the heatsink it wasn't even warm! The chipset heatsink is warm, but not hot, at my current speeds.

1.6a Malay @ 2.4
Retail HS & fan (removed thermal pad and used AS2)
1.6V (shows 1.55 in Asus Probe)
P4B266 retail (Turbo 1 setting)
400W Antec PP403X
One 90mm exhaust fan @ 3000 RPM (no intake fan installed)
CasEdge LX734AP4 chassis
2x256MB Crucial PC2100 @ 2-2-2-5 @ 150MHz @ 2.6V

LJ, it's not 40c at idle. The cpu sensor on my P4B266 doesn't register temps below 40c so it constantly reads 40c until I really push it (which means I don't know what the temp is at idle). The highest I've gotten it so far is 41c after 10 minutes of 100% cpu usage. I'm glad now that I didn't go with a different heatsink because the retail unit works great! Hopefully Asus will soon release a bios update that will correct the problem with the cpu sensor not registering temps below 40c. Hope that clears it up somewhat

I'm getting 46-48C at full load (Prime95) with my 1.6a at 2400. Works great. My old dual Celeron 366a->550 system ran about 44c at IDLE with dual alpha coolers.. so I figure 46-48c on the 1.6 under load is very reasonable.

I would gather from this thread that SOME P4B266 mobos DO provide temperature indication that is somewhat reliable. The one I put together said 40 degrees no matter what I did. MBM5 showed different readings but the CPU being cooler than the motherboard wasn't too credible IMHO. If you could believe MBM5, the cpu never got out of the 30s.

what sensors are you guys using to measure your temps? there has been some debate about which one under MBM is the correct one, asus 2 or asus(cusl2)

on mine, under asus2, I was reading around 30 c, ~41ish under load

under cusl2, I am reading around 44 idle, 48ish under load.

stock hs/f at default speed. ironically, it showed cooler temps when oc'd.

My 1.6a@2.1 (133x16) default voltage.
Asus P4B266-C - Asus Probe: Idle 40 full load 45.
I ran Sandra looped 20 times and checked immediatly.
