this is not a rebadged nec nd3500ag as i thought it might be, as it only does 2.4x dvd+r dl

still not a bad deal for $40 no rebates.

Staples is substituting an hp 6310i drive in place of the iomagic. This is another rebadged drive but I would go with HP anytime.

the IO Magic drive is a rebadged drive of benQ DW-1620A, the writing quality for this drive is awesome. I wouldn't never go with an HP since HP only rebadge the cheapest posible drive out there.

I got the IOMagic drive. Won't know which drive it is until it ships next week. Called back in and placed another order for the HP sub. $40 + tax out the door. HP is known to rebadge Philips and Liteon drives.
IOMagic rebadges everybody's drives. However, for this particular DL 16X burner, the majority of people are reporting that it is a BenQ 1620. A great drive.

Here's a review of the 1620: http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=245

The 630i is actually a BenQ drive too see list of HP drives here. The I/O Magic drive can also be a BTC if you're unlucky.

Nuts on the BTC - anyone know if there's a way to identify without opening? I was hoping for the BenQ

(Will staples accept a return if it's opened?)

why not just get the NEC 3500A or BenQ DW1620 at newegg for $65-70 shipped no rebates.
both are great DVD burners.

because $40 (plus whatever tax you paid on $70) is cheaper than $65~70

Fear the math!

Ok, finally I found out the answer. There are 2 box sizes, the bigger one is BTC and the smaller IO Magic Box is BenQ. Another way to tell is by looking at the picture. The BTC has "16X" imprinted on the front panel. So there are still some BenQ drive lying around, good luck. And I dont recommend the BTC drive at all.

i've got 2 8x4x12 burner liteon and optorite, i havent even use 8x! because all my media are 4x or 2x at 4x lol. can't do at 8x without errors. so 8x imho is useless at this moment till 8x media come down in price and 16x are priced reasonable. 9.5min. at 8x vs 15min. at 4x not a whole big deal is it? let alone 16x, 6.5 min? there's no reason to upgrade to 16x anytime soon...
my hd can barely keep up at 8x and at 4x is like writing CDR at 40x while 8x is like 80x cdr, scary!

Ya, BTC drives are craptastic. extremely high failure rate, (gal at staples said that they had a very high return rate on the I/O Magic drives, and Fry's, if you go to buy a BTC drive, and the sales person helping you is half worth a crap, will turn you away from the drive real quick) and the one drive that I had roached about 75% of the media that I threw at it. If you're wanting a cheap drive, get the NEC 3500 from Newegg for $70 shipped, and you won't need to worry about anything else. Your best bet is to stay away from likey-looky crap, and buy a name brand drive, ie, NEC, Sony, Pioneer, Plextor, and you won't have any issues.

Actually, there IS a way to tell what box has what.

The BTC should have:
16x DVD+/-R Write, 4x DVD+R Double Layer Write
-8x DVD+RW/4x DVD-RW Rewrite, 16x DVD-ROM Read
- 48x CD-R Write, 24x CD-RW Rewrite,48x CD-ROM Read

The BenQ should have:
16x DVD+/-R Write, 2.4x DVD+R Double Layer Write
- 4x DVD+RW/4x DVD-RW Rewrite, 16x DVD-ROM Read
- 40x CD-R Write, 24x CD-RW Rewrite,48x CD-ROM Read
