yea, do you get your deposit back?

nothing wrong with buying used. let the other sucker take the depreciation hit.

I should get my deposit back. I am not obligated to buy the boat I ordered, as the order was subject to a water test, financing, etc. The dealer was ordering another one for stock anyway, so they just let me pick what I want.

Even if I am out my deposit, it was only $500. I'll spend $500 to save $40,000 any day.

Congrats. Used is the only way to buy a boat.

You can find (as you did) 10 or more year old boats with very little use. It's not like buying an older car at all.

The two happiest days in a boat owner's life is the day he buys his boat...and the day he sells it. ()

(yep, been there, done that)

Yep, known a bunch of people who HAD boats, they were all thrilled to find somebody willing to buy a used boat. Over/under on the "WooHoo!! Finally sold my boat!!" update?

Nice.

Decided against the Yammy jet boat? Can't say I blame you. Your choice is a bunch better, especially for the money. Good call.

That boat looks in great shape for a 2004.

Still, next time get a Hobie.

It is in truly excellent shape. The condition made it pretty much impossible to ignore. Why buy a new boat when I could get a really, really nice used one for 30% of the price?

Apart from a few minor nicks (expected in a 12 year old boat), the only thing that was wrong with the boat during the water test is that the ski pylon was non-functional. The salesman pointed that issue out to me, and said they would fix it without me even having to ask.

I was also really impressed with the dealership and the salesman in particular. Not only did he open the dealership on a day it is normally closed (so I could water test the boat on the only day I could do so), he got one of his colleagues to come in and man their "safety" boat as well (the water temp was only 50 degrees and there is no one else boating on a Maine lake this time of year). He knew everything I wanted to know about the boat and a lot more, and went out of his way to share his knowledge with me (good and bad) so that I could make an informed purchase. It also helped that the boat I purchased was always maintained at their dealership - the salesman was able to show me detailed maintenance records since the boat was purchased in 2004. The prior owner had the boat detailed 9 of the past 12 years.

Oh yeah. I still think the Yamahas have the best stern lounge area in the 20-24' class by far. But dear lord they are cheaply made. Stick your head where the sun don't shine in one of them and you will see that a lot of the screws are driven willy nilly. And none of them have any backing. Couple that with the fact that Yamaha will NOT negotiate on price and its pretty hard to justify buying one of them vs a comparably priced Cobalt, Regal, or Chaparral. Granted Cobalts are only in the same price range during boat show season, but still.

You may be right. But I hope to buck the trend. We have a great place to use the boat, so we should have a ton of fun on it.

But if I do happen to decide to sell it, I am on the far right hand side of the depreciation curve now. There are 2001 and 2002 Cobalt 220's on boattrader that are listed for $4,000-5,000 more than what I paid for mine. So I'm pretty sure I have a good chance of recouping at least most of what I paid for the boat if I decide to sell it in the next few years.

Nah, boats can be a helluva lot of fun...until they're not. ANY part labeled "marine" will cost 3-5 times as much as the same identical part labeled for "automotive" use...alternator, fuel pump, etc...and, of course, when your boat breaks down while you're using it...you can't just pull over to the side of the road and call AAA....(well, actually with cell phones and marine radios, you can...sort of...as long as the hull is intact and the weather cooperates)

Huge selling point. The maintenance checklist is all up to snuff and dealer backed. All you have to do is fuel it up, load up, and head out. Doesn't get much better than that.

Poor man's lake front property. I have a seasonal campsite on Long Lake in Maine. Open from early May to late October. My slip is ~100 yards from my camper. We are up there just about every weekend in the summer.

I don't even have to load it up. Dealership will put it in the water in the beginning of the season and take it out at the end for almost nothing. I think they want $50 bucks for each side of that service.
