I plan on wearing dress shirts and pants to work

Talk me out of wearing dress shirts and pants to work everyday. Currently I wear shorts / jeans and T-shirt / polo, so no real dress code. I just hate occasionally dealing with the CIO and his staff. They all are dressed in suits and I'm standing there in shorts :\

My position falls anything from making the department's new wallpaper to assisting people like the CIO, Deans, or the University's president with press releases or things like that. Most of the time I never know what I'm doing the next day so I can't plan ahead.

I look damn good in black pants, white shirt, and a tie. (Should I wear a tie?)

Is this just a bad idea?

Being comfortable is more important than anything. Do whatever it takes to be comfortable.

Don't be surprised if they try to place their lunch order.

What does your direct manager wear? That's usually a good place to start. If you dress significantly better than everyone else it will stand out but not in a good way. It will look like you can't judge what is acceptable. A good rule of thumb is to take a look at what your boss wears to work and to wear things that are on par with that. If that's not possible to use as a baseline just try to stay one step up from everyone else in a similar position as you. IE, if they wear jeans and a polo you can wear khakis and a colored button down shirt.

Everything I was planning on wearing with the occasional tie

Yes... this is 100% a bad idea.

Noone wants to look good and respectable and PROMOTABLE in front of the people who sign his paycheck and control his career.

Why on earth would you want them to think you're a good employee.

Black pants and white shirt without a tie looks really tacky. You should go get some dockers in various huges of brown/tan to go along with your black slacks collection, get some colored dress shirts as well. Make sure the shirts fit. If you're thin, I suggest getting slim-fit or athletic fit shirts that hug the body more, otherwise you look like you're wearing your older brother's dress shirts.

I would skip the tie. I cant imagine a work environment that would encourage a tie but where a suit jacket is unnecessary other than in the medical environment and in that instance, everyone wears a whitecoat.

If dressing better instills more confidence in you at work, then by all means do so. You will also look more respectable and credible to your seniors.

Right on the money, here. Black pants, white shirt, and a tie is a bit too formal.

My two pieces of advice are:

1. If you have a choice between looking good and not looking good, then look good.
2. Dress to the level you wish to achieve. If you're seeking a promotion and all the people at that level dress to a certain code, then you should dress to that code as well, regardless of how your coworkers dress.

Black pants, white shirt is out the window. Just a little too formal
Now what is good without wearing khakis?

You can wear black pants with different colored/patterned shirts. How come you're against wearing khakis?

I don't see what the dilemma is.

In front of your superiors would you rather:

A. Dress well.

B. Dress like a slob with shorts and T-shirt.

Hmm. . .

Note that "dressing well" does not mean dress too formally. Black slacks and colored dress shirts with no tie work.
