I promise to not post any more tablet threads... But...

this is too good to pass up:

“This will be the most important thing I’ve ever done” – Steve Jobs, referring to the soon-to-be-launched Apple Tablet.
We haven’t heard this first hand, but we’ve heard it multiple times second and third hand from completely independent sources. Senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited about the upcoming Apple Tablet as he’s ever been. Coming from the man who has created so much, that’s saying something.

If Steve Jobs thinks the iPhone was just a warm up act to this device, I can’t wait to see what it can do. As if our expectations weren’t already set high enough. We’ll all know a lot more this Wednesday.

ehh, if it is what it sounds like (a "souped" up iphone) I don't see any point in the device. I have an iphone as do a few million other people, I don't ever see buying a slightly larger version of what I already own.

If he really said that he sounds really desperate. I dont see how it could be great, lack of physical keyboard for a laptop like device is a deal breaker. I know it will have a touch screen keyboard but that will take up screen space.

Im excited to see it though, it will be a killer ebook reader that is for sure.

The iPhone was epic because it combined the cell-phone and the iPod into one smooth package.

I'm not sure what the tablet is going to do for us. ( but I do hope it is equally epic so I can convince myself to get one )

Double post

I'm now depending on this device to have a full blown iWork/iLife suite optimized for touch. This is the only thing I've heard that is making me interested so far.

Everyone who expects this thing to be a credible e-book reader needs to pause and realize that, due its color screen, the tablet can never have the batter life necessary to be an e-reader. Kindle can go for weeks without a recharge. This thing--if it gets 10 hours, I'll be surprised. Additionally, one great things about e-readers is their screen is easy on the eyes. The tablet will have an LCD, which isn't. Without any chance of it being an e-reader or retailing for $500 tops, I really don't see the point of this device. I can't see how this tablet can be good for anything except dicking around. Under no circumstances can it possibly replace any kind of laptop. There is already a small touch-screen device for dicking around (iPod Touch and iPhone), so what's left. There is literally nothing in between that people do with computers or hand-helds.

Exactly. Not only does Apple have to come up with a device, but they also have to create a need for it.

Yeah...I'm not seeing the need either. This reminds me of the "greatest invention of personal mobility" that is the Segway... neat on its own merit...but not that great given the lack of need.

I read on iPhone with no problems. Do you have any source that LCDs are not easy on the eyes?

But I agree, there is no way they sell it for $500, i doubt they will sell it for less then 700. Then who would buy it when you can get a ipod for $300, or a mac book for a couple hundred more.

I have always wanted a tablet though, but this isnt like the tablets i have wanted. Flip around screens with full keyboards. I would like this if i can take notes on it, but not at $1K.

I guess we will see, i know the SI mag advertisement looked awesome. To me it would be great for reading newspapers, magazines, books etc. Again not worth $1K.

Though to many people, especially mac users, the price maybe worth it. It might be worth it to me after i see the specs and features.

Also on another note, I had a professor that had a mac tablet. So this isnt there first time with a tablet.

I guess I am lucky cause extended use of LCD's does not bother me one bit. Heck, I thought one of the major selling points of LCD's over CRT's was the former's reduction in eye strain.

I just have a feeling this will be $400 or maybe even less. They're going to drop the price across the board on iPod Touches, ditch AT and T exclusively, and have a different pricing plan for the iPhone. So you'll have iPod's at the $200 price point, the tablet at $400, and the cheapest Macbook at $800+

This just strikes me as one of those things Stevie has up his sleeve. He's really going to surprise the crap out of people.

At this point, he has to. Which kinda sucks, there is so much hype for this it's almost impossible to deliver.

Although, during the conference call today Tim Cook said: "I dont want to take away your joy and surprise on Wednesday."

No way, iPod touches are still selling out at current prices. Apple will never lower prices to that degree.

Sure would be nice though, maybe it would finally create some competition for MS.

According to the article on engadget ipod sales were down 9%. Granted this didn't divide up the different types but as a whole they are down.

iPod touches were up 55%

yeah, they were probably mentioning just the shuffle, nano, and classic. i have a feeling once the touch gets bumped to 128GB, the classic will go away. i also think that the shuffle and nano are fine where they are (spec bumps and usual upgrades cant hurt).

ipod sales were down because everyone bought an iphone.

Ain't a chance in hell the prices on anything come down more than the standard $50-100. And unless they somehow managed to invent a new battery technology, there's no way to make it a viable e-reader, which makes it a (useless) niche device floating in the middle of an iphone and laptop.
