I'm going to arrest you for kidnapping

WTF?

The officer is correct. Holding anyone against their will is kidnapping. Technically he was, however briefly, "kidnapping" the officer when he obstructed the officer's exit.

ZV

Not true. Of course, this depends entirely on your local laws and the nature of the crime being committed.

Yeah I doubt any states allow a citizen's arrest for speeding.

The officer handled the situation well. I have no idea why the guy put this video on Youtube, because it only makes him look like a douchebag. He wanted a reaction from the cop, and he got nothing.

Agreed. However, in most states, reckless driving can be considered a felony. Of course, that requires a lot more than just run-of-the-mill speeding.

Class 1 Misdemeanor in VA.

In any case, the fact remains that the officer would have technically been within the letter of the law to arrest the moron for "kidnapping". The DA may or may not have chosen to pursue charges, but the arrest would have been legitimate.

However, it would also have been a PR nightmare because all the tinfoil hat-wearing crazies would have claimed the arrest was nothing but retaliation. Frankly, I think that the officer handled things extremely well.

Here is the story for this...

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A YouTube video of an Accomack County Sheriff's deputy allegedly speeding has become the talk of the Eastern Shore. The driver who videotaped the deputy later confronted him.

Accomack County Sheriff Larry Giddens says Deputy Jason Campbell was simply caught on tape making a mistake. He tells WAVY.com the young officer wasn't responding to a call and shouldn't have been speeding. The sheriff says Campbell has been disciplined. He wouldn't tell us Deputy Campbell's punishment.

'Don't do it again, k?'

'K.'

IMHO, following / catching up to the officer made the situation much more dangerous- Mr. Civic was likely fixated on the cruiser, and not paying as much attention to everything else as he should have been. Granted, this is conjecture- but still.

i can understand why he didnt, same reason why he didnt arrest the idiot. the cop was a douche for speeding, but cops have not been setting the bar as role models for that shit for years. all the guy really had to do was get his car number, time and location and reported him to the sheriffs office. that guy wouldnt have fared as well in some places. like maricopa county, for example.

What, just because he says fuck more often than a 2 Live Crew greatest hits album?

I personally liked how deftly he wove his unshakeable faith into the narrative.

God is surely "on his side!" Jesus Christ, fucking God damnit!

unfortunately his faith was the only thing that was unshakeable about that video

I would have picked a better place to pull over had I been in the cops shoes, it would have been a tactical nightmare if the pursuant had other motives.

here in az, you can "citizens arrest" for just about anything. the catch is, you can not detain said person under any circumstances. but, if i have enough info to ID you, youll get that warrant and summons regardless. as long as im willing to follow thru and press charges. hell, in az if the charge is strong enough and theres decent evidence, the state will pick up the case and i wont even be needed to follow thru. ive seen this first-hand from both sides of it (i didnt get someone arrested, an old guy in my old apt complex did, and got arrested for detaining him. in a choke hold.)

Nice find.

I've never seen a weaker more clueless cop in my life. To think this dude is called upon to 'serve and protect', lol.

Man if that were an LA County Sheriff he probably would have been on the ground in a pile of hurt, same with just about any other place imaginable, should consider himself lucky the deputy was so passive

I was surprised by this too. A rookie that didn't want no trouble I suppose. If it was a more seasoned cop, he would of booked him for interfering - likely the guy would of been let go from lock up within an hour, and the cop would of took the little slap on the wrist from his Sgt or Captan later on.

citizens arrest could end up as a warrant if youre not on the scene. check it out. usually it will be a subpoena from what they told me, but if the charges are sound and dire enough, it could be a warrant. im betting aggravated assault, which carries a mandatory 24hr stay in jail just for being accused, will turn into that warrant. yes, thats the one i got hit up on. it was bs, but the guy got me in jail for a day for nothing. and they came and got me on a warrant, not a request to appear.

Can't see the video, but I read most of the replies.

a) Guy is an idiot to go about it the way he did.

b) I'm amazed how everyone is casual about the cop's 90mph speeding without repercussions. He had no reason to do 90mph, and the article that is listed above says he wasn't responding to a call. Cops should NOT be allowed to, when they are not on response, to speed according to their free will. They need to follow the law in normal instances just like any other citizen. The county Sheriff's response of 'making a mistake' is total B.S. as well. Can I just tell a cop "Listen, I made a mistake speeding 90mph. Sorry" and expect nothing to come of it? No. In fact we can say, "Sure it was a mistake, and here is a ticket affirming this mistake, and by paying a fine we hope you do not repeat this mistake". The cop should face the same penalty, as well as go through internal procedures for cops who deviate from their job.

Note: I have never had a ticket, parking or speeding. I live in SoCal so driving fast is a normal part of life. 80mph is normal. I hate it when a copy passes by and everyone tries to slow down to 65mph. I continue at my pace and have never been harmed. Cops have only helped me, so I don't have a desire to call them 'pigs' or anything. But this LEO clearly isn't doing his job right, and his status as a LEO shouldn't exempt him when he isn't responding to a call.

My observation is that while no one here is condoning the officer's speeding, it's much more reprehensible that some vigilante decided to break all those speeding/traffic laws himself, while being orders of magnitude more distracted, just to confront the cop. As it turns out the cops wasn't on a call...but the cam operator didn't know that, and should count his lucky stars for it.

And in the end...the cop was "reprimanded". Big fucking whoopdee doo.

I can also guarantee that the speed was greater on the part of Mr. Civic, else he never would've caught up.

Skimming through...by 2:40, my only thoughts are, "SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP."
Like listening to some idiot jock stroking his own ego for several minutes.
"Aww damn, 90 miles an hour, damn that's dangerous, but I'm doing it anyway because I'm such a badass. And I'm chasing a cop too, oh my god I'm so awesome I could blow myself right now. MMMM! Shit if I were any more hardcore, that cop could just tase me right now and I wouldn't even feel it!"

Chura46 needs to be neutered, and given an IQ increase of about 50 points to at least get him within a standard deviation of average intelligence.
