What do you get out of doing that? When I do that kind of thing it leaves me dead tired the rest of the day and hurting the next.

I much prefer to run the 45 minute 4.5 mile.

what's ridiculous are those marathon runners that can run at such a fast pace compared to avg people, and do it for like 3hrs!

That's pretty friggin good... I can only do it a little over a minute faster. I am close to 10 yrs younger though!

And to think... when I was training a lot more (bad knees) I was only at 9:45 pace or around 20mins flat for 5ks.

that is pretty good! Under 8 minutes per mile! You want to hear something crazy though? I'm at XC training camp right now (SUNY Brockport) and we had a 2-mile time trial the other day. 5 kids ran 2 miles in under 10 minutes. They weren't even racing, just running moderately hard. The first kid came through in 9:40, and he can run a 14:41 5K. I have never been so humbled in my life. These kids here are FAST!

My best mile is HS was 5:51, I could have worked to get faster, but this was towards then end of my last year of PE (only took two years at my HS).

I'm trying to work on running a mile in the sub 6:30 range; I used to average 6:05-6:30 in the mile.

I believe it. When you train constantly you get to a point where you can run a certain pace and just not get tired. I can run at about 6:30 mile pace and won't be out of breath for a long time. Once I start to drop below that I start to struggle. Its just they train so much that running 5:30 mile pace doens't hurt them at all. They probably have resting heart rates in the 30 beats per minute range too so that helps.

running 1.5 in 11 is a good time. Why did you go for 6 laps why not 8 or 4. Seems odd to stop at 1.5. You should try for 2 miles in <14. I weigh 180 pounds 6' and can run a mile in less than 5 minutes so don't think weight has anything to do with speed. Endurance is everything.
