but as we became more intelligent, each of these gods went away because we didn't need them because we now understand how the sun works and the moon works and why it rains, etc.

so, now we are down to 1, won't we eventually be smart enough to not need that one, too?

BTW: i grew up in the bible belt and have not been exposed to many different types of religion so excuse my ignorance.

That's funny, the single biggest decrease in the number of gods people believed in in history directly preceded the greatest technological collapse in history.

?

Polytheism -> Monotheism
Roman Empire -> Dark Ages.

I'm not saying that one leads to the other, just providing evidence to disprove your hypothesis.

Evolved? Oh common. Kinda high on yourself?
THere are MANY religious people that don't fallow a specific book. People that simply believe in a higher being that isn't confined to the specific teachings of a singular book.

Please get off your high horse. You're no more "evolved" than anyone.

LOL.. yah becasue Im smart enough to releaze the only thing we have to blame for our hardships or our triumphs is OURSELVES.. I dont need some fvcking idiotic spirit or book to tell me what to do or how to live...or the need to be hand held into beleiveing that death is more than death and wormfood.. people are so insecure that they have to invent an heaven and a hell to scare people into living well..

Religion is failing because it's obsolete. Classic Bill HIcks!

Honestly, it exists for one reason. People don't want to think that death is the end. Well, it is.

Why do you feel that religion is some sacred idea that everyone should be open minded to? If an idea is so outlandlandish, why is it closed minded to mock it? I certainly don't believe in magic fairies. If some one based their lives on magic fairies I might well "put it down" for being a dumb idea. Is that closed minded or just rational thinking?

I don't know where this thinking that all ideas are unique little snowflakes that must be respected began, but it is certainlly not academically sound.

It was never about God or religion to me, but the questions. Those unanswerable questions that plague my mind.

Same here. I had some deep thoughts about the universe that left me wondering for a long time.

Well, probably not. There is this nice documentary on religion by Richard Dawkins called "The root of all evil?" (you might be interested, you can find it in the usual places). One of the clips in that is about one of those huge new evangelical churches - huge complex, 12000 members etc. There is one scene that particularly struck me - you could see these teens (looked 16-18) in ties and shirts standing at the foot of the podium listen to some christian band. On their faces you could see these huge smiles and near ecstasy of being there.

So this is why I don't think it'll happen - although it makes way more sense than christianity or islam, atheism doesn't offer any sense of community or belonging. Thus, people always flock to the feel good community and togetherness, even if it is irrational...

What is funny is people do not believe in God, because they cannot see him or feel him ect.

Yet when Dr' So and So comes on and explains the laws of quantum physics, no one questions him.

Same when people come on and explain String Theory etc.

Science is a faith as much as Christianity is.

(Personally I trust in both, I'm an odd Christian though, who would probably get thrown out of a catholic church).

Actually, atheists, since they believe in no higher power, have thereby elevated humanity to the position of supreme being of the universe and thereby believe in six billion gods. That makes them the most primitive of all, I guess.

you are so goddamn stupid its not even funny...i dont mean to flame but...DAMN...you really need to take some philosophy/logic classes...

Hmmm... I guess I agree with the OP, lack of knowledge does produce the conception of deities to explain the unexplainable. Just to point out some things here, atheists don't believe in a God or gods, period. They have no faith, they live life as it, just as do the billions of other organisms on this planet.

Let me be the third to say, you know NOTHING about science. The two examples you gave are theories. Look up the definition of theory, it isn't fact. Theories are concepts based upon some facts/data but so far cannot be proven. Science is in almost every way based purely on fact. Ever heard of the scientific method? I didn't think so.

Anyway, myself, at this point in my life I'm probably an agnostic. I dont care for any of the religions I see today (wont go into detail, I dont wish to offend anyone), but so far nothing/no one has proven to me the existence of God. In the same sense, no one has proven to me that God doesn't exist, either.

That was my point...

Science and Religion both follow back to the starting point. Where it all came together, than you have anomalies, and things that do not fit yet. Instead of saying "Perhaps a diety or creator was involved" You get these theories, some based on math, some based on observations, some based on hopes that would fix the whole but still cannot be measured.

Both are based on facts and faith..

You guys need to look a lil outside the box before jumping with your "You don't know anything about science!" crap.

from the perspective of personality god is a loving person, from the perspective of spirituality god is a personal love .. many things after death will seem like god, but won't quite be not for a million lives from now. who cares how many god like beings there are, quantity is mundane, quality is divine.
