My original temperature for my athlon xp 2800 was 140's Farenheit and after applying Arctic Silver 5, I monitored the temperature and it stayed at the low 100's max was 102 . I think it also helped with performance because 3dmark2003 was always around 5350ish and I just ran another test right after the arctic silver and it ran up to 5390. Its not much but hey its cool to see it jump a few points. The only tough part was getting the stupid heatsink off and putting it back on (Its the one where you have to use a flat head screwdriver and if you are not careful enough, u might just slip and damage your motherboard. I had a 3 close calls shoving the screwdriver onto the motherboard) but other than that, I'm a happy camper.

There may have been another issue, I'm thinking that AS5 didn't give you 40 degrees. Perhaps your HS was not applied correctly or there was little or no pad/paste on the previous app. Anyhow, glad you are running cool now.

I wouldnt be too happy about a 40 pt. jump in 3dMark, you could run it again and be 80 pts. lower. As for the temp. drop, never heard of AS5 making that much of a difference, were you using ANY thermal paste before? I went from a stock intel HSF w/ the thermal pad, to a Zalman CNPS7000-Cu w/ AS5 and only noticed a 4C drop at idle, and a 12-15C drop @ load. Good idea to note your temps in celsius, thats what everybody measures with, fahrenheit is confusing (which is also confusing since we use F for everything else)

40 units of F is about 22C difference isnt it??

Thats a LOT. Like, more than I'd expect of there was no goop there at all previously. TBH I suspect either there was a huge dollop of generic goop there before, or the 'sink wasnt installed correctly and now is.

Since you seem a little prone to slipping with the driver, next time use one those blade fits quite snugly in the holder and put a bit of cardboard or plastic where the 'driver might slip onto.

AS5 is good, but not 40 degrees worth of good. You had your hsf on backwards the first time, and got it on correctly after applying AS5.

I've got a Barton 2800+, and I was running at the following temps with the stock cooler.

CPU Diode- 60' C
CPU- 58' C

After buying an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M, and applying the silicone paste they included, my idle CPU tsmps went to

CPU Diode- 52-53' C
CPU- 46' C

I'd say thats decent, but I was also thinking about getting some AS5, A lot of people say the 2800+'s run hot......

Are those temps load or idle? Hopefully those are load temps. AS5 isn't going to make a big difference, if any at all (max 1-2C @ load, probably negligible @ idle). I wouldn't worry too much about your temps, especially if you aren't OC'ing, or raising the vcore.

It was really old goop under the heatsink trust me, it wasn't greasy like its suppose to be. My computer kept on restarting everytime I did something cpu intentive like call of duty or some other demanding task. It kept starting over and over thats when I knew I had some heat problems and when I checked under the heatsink, I knew it was time to replace the stock paste with AS5. Plus inside the heatsink was a lot of dust, I had to use a vacuum cleaner to suck it clean. Now I play games and all with no hiccups, as far as the 40 degree farenheit, It may have dropped 40 degrees not only because of AC5 but maybe because I also turn on the air con or something. But I swear before I did anything about the heat problem the cpu temp was in the 140s after cleaning and AC5 it went down to 100's and still is

The biggest difference probably came from cleaning your heatsink. If there was a lot of dust in there, it was
probably interfering with your airflow preventing your heatsink from functioning properly.

no way AS5 could make anywhere near that much difference. I agree with the others that your heatsink was not mounted right to start with.

Arctic Silver should only lower temp by 2 or 3 C at MOST compared to worst generic paste. I would say that's generous. If it lowers lot more than that something was wrong before. Many times it's not installing heatsink correctly or simply too much dust buildup.

Who cares whether it made the difference?!? You're all so pessimistic! Just say "Great job for making your CPU cool and have it done, honestly! Damn party poopers!
