I know a few people around 25-30 who don't know how to use a computer properly. A lot of them only know Windows and that is that. The most annoying thing is that they often double-click on items in the quicklaunch, and they then close one windows immediately. I can't remember how many times I tell them to just click once, but...

wow, so much wrong in that article...from both the woman and dell.
so dell wouldn't take it back and install their windows image on it? I haven't used Verizon internet service, but I had earthlink previously and that came with a cd to install some crap. i didn't need the cd to get the internet to work...

MCFARLAND (WKOW) -- Abbie Schubert paid more than $1,100 for a Dell laptop hoping to enroll in online classes at MATC.

But something stopped her: Ubuntu.

That's an operating system for your computer similar to Windows that runs off the Linux system.

Schubert says she ordered her laptop online at Dell.com expecting to buy your classic bread-and-butter computer.

She didn't realize until the next morning her laptop defaulted to the Ubuntu operating system.

"It's been a mess," she said. "I regret ordering the computer."

Schubert says she never heard of Ubuntu before learning that's when she accidentally bought. She called Dell the very next day and says the representative told her there was still time to change back to Windows.

But she says Dell discouraged her.

"The person I was talking to said Ubuntu was great, college students loved it, it was compatible with everything I needed," said Schubert.

So she stuck with it.

Later, she discovered Ubuntu might look like Windows, but it doesn't always act like it.

Her Verizon High-Speed Internet CD won't load, so she can't access the internet. She also can't install Microsoft Word, which she says is a requirement for MATC's online classes.

As a result, with no internet and no Microsoft Word, Schubert dropped out of MATC's fall and spring semesters.

She also says Dell claimed it was now too late to get Windows and any changes she made herself would void her warranty.

"I'm extremely frustrated," said Schubert. "I wanted to get back to school, but I needed a computer to be able to do that."

27 News contacted Dell, but the company has not responded to us yet.

However, we think we've helped her get back to school.

Verizon says it will dispatch a technician to try to assist her accessing the internet without using the Windows-only installation disk.

MATC also says it promises to accept any of Schubert's papers or class documents using whatever software she has installed.

What a fucking idiot. Next time actually pay attention when you're ordering. The Dell guy was also a moron... "The person I was talking to said Ubuntu was great, college students loved it, it was compatible with everything I needed." Yeah, real compatible you tard.

The compatibility issue seems like it was with the user and not the OS.

Still, the Dell guy should have told her to send it back immediately when she said she'd never heard of Ubuntu. How the heck did she order it then anyway? I have trouble finding the Ubuntu laptops on Dell's website when I'm looking for them.

Does anyone else think this story was a plant by a Microsoft operative to dissuade the general public from switching to Linux?

I don't get how you accidentally order a laptop with Ubuntu from Dell. You have to go clicking around to find it. Additionally, there is the nifty feature of being able to review the specs of the computer before final purchase.

I like how she's blaming the laptop. Why not just install windows if she really hates ubuntu? But why not just actually TRY to use ubuntu. If she only needs it for documents and the internet Ubuntu will do that no harder then Windows but at worse nothing stops her from getting Windows on it. I'm sure dell can even offer an OEM copy of XP or Vista.

I'm convinced that the original story, plus the second followup link posted by finalnight, have made my IQ drop several points. I wish I could point out all of the idiocy, but it would take me too long. So, I'll point out a few things that irk me:

1) Verizon High-Speed Internet Disk - Why the hell do you need a disk to get on the internet? Last time I checked, you just plug in to the router and go. Also, Ubuntu has EXCELLENT driver and networking support. Hell, setting up a wireless connection under Ubuntu was just as easy if not easier than under Windows.

2) Microsoft Word required for online classes - It's called KOffice, and 30 seconds of Googling the phrase "ubuntu office" and clicking on the first result would have told you everything you needed to know.

3) Pissed that Ubuntu "assumes everyone is tech-savvy" - Are you kidding? Ubuntu is the idiot's linux distribution. It's simple and completes quite a few basic tasks automatically. If you can't figure out Ubuntu, you're an idiot.

2) You can use Open Office, which is pre-installed with Ubuntu.
The only issue I ever had with OO in Ubuntu was it could never properly display equations and the appropriate symbols when I opened a document typed up in Word on a Windows or Mac. Had the same problem when I installed MSOffice through WINE... Eventually went back to Windows XP after using Ubuntu for about 4.5 months.

3) Definitely true. You might have to do a little work at times to get something working the way you want, but there is a huge community and a little googling usually solves your problem.

I can't really fault the lady. Many people aren't interested in learning new software or tinkering, they want their computer to "just work." And yes, Ubuntu is very easy to use, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not Windows. There's still a bit of a learning curve just because it's a different OS, and that's something many people would rather not deal with.
