I remember why I hate Verizon

I wanted to save money so dropped my $65 a month ATT plan to go on with a friend on his Verizon account. He gave me a phone; Droid DNA, and charging me a small $45 a month for basically unlimited data (he has over 30 GB a month).

Was great service wise for the first month until the Droid battery life went from kinda bad to draining 15% an hour or more and battery getting hot. He told me it wasn't great when he gave me the phone.

Anyhow, went into the Verizon store planning to buy a new phone outright. The sales associate said even though I was added to the line they could not let me buy a phone for cash and switch my current sim/ID to a new phone. They refused to contact the owner and said even if he came in they would require me to wait a month to activate it??? I was ready to pay cash for either a Note4/iPhone 6 plus.

In the past ATT has no issues calling my Step Dad to turn on a new phone for my sister. Do my local Verizon agents just suck or is this a US Verizon thing?

They are full of it. They really shouldn't even know anything about "your friend added you to his plan" or anything, that is just going to give them ways to be stupid. They want to sell contracts and accessories and insurance.

Just go back, maybe a different store, and buy it outright. Or do it online.

Wait a month? LOL

Why buy the phone directly from Verizon? surely there are better places to buy a phone off contract...

Also if you have $600 for a new note 4, why did you go through the trouble of switching carriers to save 20 bucks a month using an old Droid DNA?

Sounds more like yes you have possession of that line but you aren't authorized on the account to make any changes. Which would be the same at any carrier. The whole not being able to activate for a month thing seems like a farce though. Maybe they didn't trust your story more than anything and were being overly cautious.

I was going to buy a new phone even if I stayed with ATT. My orignal plan was to switch to T-mobile Wal-mart plan for $30 a month. Friend talked me into trying Verizon for 2 weeks free and included his old phone free.

I cancelled ATT when my contract ended Nov 9th. Figured $20 less a month with 2 weeks "free" was a solid deal. Plus for hiking in NY my friends with Verizon always seemed to have better coverage in the woods then myself on ATT or my T-mobile iPad.

My real hate of Verizon stems from 2006 when I was still active duty and they said US Army soldiers get 25% off the bill. After three months in a row having to call in to fix my bill I told them to keep their crappy service and switch carriers. (They kept not applying the discount)

I can afford a higher priced plan but why waste money on a monthly over priced package?

Yes, because if you can afford a new phone, you should never look for ways to save money.

You should just buy the phone online (eBay/Amazon/etc.) and swap the SIM card yourself. Done.

And yes, they are full of it. That's exactly why I always avoid stores and the sales people.

+1

I've been hearing a lot of stores telling people bad information because of the holidays to try to lock people into contracts. With Verizon 4G you do not need them to activate anything anymore. It is like GSM. Switch out the SIM card and the phone works.

Yes you can buy the phone and swap the SIM without getting Verizon involved.
HOWEVER, depending on what phone you get, you will need a new SIM.

Droid DNA is Micro-SIM
Note 4 is Micro-Sim
iPhone 6 Plus is Nano Sim.

So if you went iPhone 6, the account holder would have to get Verizon to activate a new SIM.

Buy a SIM cutter, it's like $6 on Amazon. No need to worry about SIM size anymore.

 throw in a pack of the SIM adapters and you are golden. I like the Noosy stuff thus far for both cutter and adapters.

When I was first switching to LTE I was doing the ol' "upgrade 2nd line and then swap wife's phone back on and keep the new shiny for myself" shuffle but obviously needed a SIM. First corporate store I went in the guy flat out refused to help me (I also have unlimited data).

I have to admit, I found it hard to feel entirely brokenhearted this last summer when I saw that location was shut down.

There is one store I go to that is surprisingly helpful and competent.
