It's not a great idea, but as Fritzo says it won't hurt anything in the short run, just don't play it that way for months. And lots of heavy handed pro's keep an extra supply of single E strings, nothing at all wrong with changing a single broken string, it will only sound odd if the other 5 are really dead. Pulling off 5 new strings just so you can change the whole set at once is a waste of money

Reliable? No. You'll have tuning issues, not to mention possibly breaking the nut.

Strings are cheap, go buy another e string.

Whole sets of strings are cheap. Never replace just one string, it won't ever sound right. Replace all of them at the same time.

Never heard this...many that really play have to pull off single string replacements commonly.

OP and others...how the fuck are you breaking strings during restringing? Once the string starts getting taunt you should be testing it's tune.

Electric and acoustic are strung the same way as well if they have the same head stocks.

Being careless. I just kept on twisting the tuning peg, thinking maybe I should make it a bit tighter before stopping and seeing its tune. That stupidity got me into this situation.

1. Rough spot on the nut or bridge
2. Improper winding of the string around the peg, or kinking of the string

With small strings E,B wrap it tightly around the peg 5-6 times before sending the string through the hole, never put the string through the hole then wrap.

Most common cause of this is a rough spot on the nut

I don't do this.

I put the string through the hole, and pull finger length of slack. I then use my handy dandy string winder and wrap the string under and over the the hole a few times. This creates a natural knot in the string and prevents it from slipping.
