After 20 years of doubting whether I've seen a shooting star, last night, I can definitively say I have seen a shooting star. It was probably space garbage but amazing none the less. Wow! It was 1AM and was walking around when in my peripheral vision I saw something move. I looked up and there she was a yellow bright light crossing the sky. I'd say it was as bright if not brighter than Venus. I can tell it was burning because the light glow was flickering. I got a good 2 second view before it disappeared.

On two other occasions I thought I had seen shooting stars but it was so fast that I doubted whether I saw something or just a trick of the eye. I'm happy that I'm not delirious after all. You guys gotta see some before you die. Watching it in youtube doesn't count.

I'm guessing your profile is a lie, cuz in the Caribbean you can see dozens every night.

Took you 20 years to see a shooting star? Seriously, you need to look up more at night. The night sky is beautiful thing.

Waiting for a star to fall
And carry you back into my arms
That's where you belong
In my arms baby yeah.

Wow... major points for the obscure reference to a late 80s song.

On the subject of UFO's, I've seen several. Three of which performed maneuvers that no known man-made object can do. Pretty neat.

Shooting stars happen all the time though, I see two or three a night, and I have some nasty light pollution where I am.

Its pretty common to see shooting stars. Once while at an astronomy camp the instructor also showed us an artificial satellite! We saw it without telscopes with our bare eyes!

Go anywhere that doesn't have light pollution from a city and it's very common to see them.

When I was younger I'd go down to Key West a lot and sleep on the open deck of a catamaran and while lying there every night I'd seem this on a regular basis.

I could even see satellites moving up there.

I think the Perseids meteor shower is starting, should peak in another month.

Way more common for those of you with less light pollution.
Around the big cities the skies are a pale imitation of what it is in the mountains.

Peaks ~Aug. 11-12. Typically only see them about a week before/after peak.

Probably saw the ISS?
ISS doesn't move as fast as a meteor.

I am surprised people in cities can see anything in the night sky. Where my brother lives is perfect for looking at the sky. It is so dark outside that other than moon light you couldn't see the person standing next to you.
I've been thinking about getting a telescope to use at his place, just not sure what to get, never really spent time researching .
