LoTR isn't about Trolls, this thread however is a different story

I can understand the geek/nerd bit, as I posted about the "geek by association" in a different thread. Its that 1 guy out of 10 dressed up as Chewbacca/a hobbit/Worf/Storm Trooper that makes every person in line at LoTR look like a geek. Having said that, I loved the books, and I loved the movie. Willow had many of the same elements, and can be said was even more childish, but that was a great movie in its own right.

My roommate wore a ring out one night, I was like wtf is that??? I asked him who he thought he was,

Chodo F@ggins, the Gaylord of the Rings???

Half my friends had no clue what I was talking about, but they all laughed b/c it sounded funny and my roommate was in fact wearing a ghey-o ring. Pretty funny stuff.

Wow, someone that liked Enya... what does that say??

And also look at all the shmucks that watched Titanic and liked it enough to see it multiple times...

Robert Plant is soo a nerd... Zeppelin's not "hard" like System of a Down, Incubus, etcetc.

I happen to be a big fan of the books and the movie, but I am also a nerd so I don't really help much here

LOTR: FOTR is a little overhyped but the movie is really great. It just sucked compared to the book though

Haha. so true. The only time I get ridiculed for being a "nerd" because I love Tolkien is on the internet from people I don't know. People in real life either don't care, or actually respect someone for being passionate about something. Then again maybe I just have some good friends

During lunch at work, I was reading the first book and some of the ladies (about my age; 24) in the lab area sat by me and made a comment about the book. They talked about how they loved the books and the movie and so on. I thought it was cool that hot chicks liked the story.

I have yet to meet anyone that makes fun of people that have read/watched LOTR.

They probably thought you had Lord and Taylor's Rings and Jewelry catalog.

As long as you haven't seen Harry Potter we can let that comment pass. Harry Potter is a much more childish and nerdish movie than LOTR can ever be, hell, the main character's a nerdy kid!

You consider those bands - especially Incubus - to be "hard" ?? Wow.

Blasphemy! LOTR is the Bible!

Have you read the books?

Its great that a movie has been made... but even if it was never made I still like the books.

Since it was in print first, different people from all walks of life can interpret the themes how ever they want.
Even in some ways Tolkien might not have intended. Thats what made it have a mass appeal, especially in the
60s and 70s.

Starwars on the other hand it was in film form first, which is a set of images to the directors likening. Since a book was never released theres no backdrop onto how Starwars could be interpreted. Which limits the demographic of who the movie appeals to. Its kind of set into stone by the film. That way there was only themes George Lucas intended to be there whatever they were. Sure its crazy now that Lucas wants to re-do the films on dvd.

On the other hand because of the release of LOTR film(s), an interpretation of the books can be made. Some Tolkien purists may not like the adaptation but they have the book to fall back on. I personally think its a pretty good adaptation of the book. You can't do that with Starwars. Sure there are books released after the movie but its not the same.

I dont think its a fair assumption but its your opinion. Strangely I never saw anyone dress up for the midnight showing of LOTR:FOTR, but I did for Episode I and II.

That's because they were all dressed like Frodo, were wearing the Ring of Power, and snuck in front of you in line already

In HS, there was this guy in my class who dressed like dork and carried around a LOTR book where ever he went. He'd pick his boogers and pimples and eat them. :Q Oh yeah, he wore a cloak to class before too. You can be damn sure me and my friends made fun of him left and right.

Last I heard, he got married to an equally freaky girl and they both changed their last name to something from LOTR. That guy was a f*cking nut job.
