I'm guessing I would enjoy this movie simply because I think the director has a ton of potentional. Tron Legacy wasn't exactly the most complex, thought-provoking movie (understatement), but goddamn it was well-done and entertaining. A surprisingly rare combination.

I enjoyed it. The soundtrack was pretty good and the movie had a few interesting concepts. It was decent sci-fi which is rare. I think it could have used more freeman and less top gun shit but overall I enjoyed it enough that I'll probably get the blu-ray. those drones are so evil, it was a juxtaposition from the human mission control lady. I thought it was really lame to have her voice kind of go mechanical, but then again lots of things in the movie assume the audience is not very bright or paying attention, or kids I guess. The end track gets me pumped up, I was the only one in the theater who sat through that and I've been listening to it on my way to work. that and some of the other tracks make for an epic commute.

Yeah I'm with you. I enjoyed Tron: Legacy far more than I ever expected I would. I just hope he gets attached to a stronger script next time because it seems he definitely has some directing chops.

This one had pieces of pretty much every single sci-fi movie ever made in it, 2001, Moon, Planet of the Apes, Matrix, etc. Not a terrible thing, it just felt pretty predictable and kind of boring.

KT

Pieces yes, but the way the all fit together was new, at least for me.

I mean, sure I can name half a dozen movies with a vaguely similar premise. But to me that makes Oblivion incredibly unique and special, because for most movies I can name dozens of examples with 100% identical plots and hundreds of examples with similar plot, sometimes thousands.

It's said there are only 7 different basic plots, there are limits to what you can do. I though Oblivion's take was unique, even if you can see where individual pieces were taken from.

I've seen none of the movies you listed, although I tried to watch Melancholia once and turned it off after the first 10 minutes where it seemed nothing happened at all. I might attempt to watch it again sometime, but did feel like one of those predictable movies- everyone is talking about how the other planet is going to hit earth, so it's like you already know how the movie will end in the first few minutes.

"there is nothing new under the sun"
I could easily find a ton of movies this one reminded me of

2001: A Space Odyssey
The Matrix
Star Trek The Motion Picture
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Battlefield Earth
Independence Day

But in the end, I still thought it was a decent story on its own right.

Not sure what the deal with the dilated pupils on Victoria was about.

I am wondering if Cruise is a fan of classical literature and metaphors.

He used the gates of fire "Spartans against Persians" reference in "The Last Samurai" and he used Horatius on the bridge in this movie. Both of them are similar events and are used as metaphors today.

Watched it on Amazon video recently and following the plot was interesting and the visuals were cool. But little things in the action tend to spoil things just a bit. Like when the three drones were chasing Jack into the clouds. The drones can't put a lock on a fighter craft in the clouds? They could have easily made a couple hits on it. Unless Jack would have used countermeasures to laser fire.

And when the drones went to attack the complex manned by Freeman's character they could have just set off a huge bomb carried by one of the drones to pretty much wipe out the inside of the hideout. Maybe I shouldn't get into so many what ifs and try to go with the flow of the movie so I won't feel bothered at paying almost $15 usd for it on Amazon streaming.

It's been a few months so I don't remember all the details, but wasn't the bomb on the drone put there by the human resistance? I don't think the drones carried bombs by default.

Sorry for bumping this old thread but I saw this film recently and couple obvious plot holes came to mind:

When Jack, Tech 49, was fighting with Tech 52, Vika should have seen/noticed the fight as she's constantly watching over her tech.

When Jack went to Tower 52, he was still wearing his Tech 49 suit. Shouldn't Vika had noticed the incorrect number on the uniform?

One more plot hole:

Why was Julia's sleep capsule labeled "Julia Rusakova" and not "Julia Harper"?

I'd like to articulate why the movie was terrible, but that means I'd have to watch it again. I don't want to do that.

I liked it a lot and a sort of spiritually similar movie is Elysium. Then there is one that doesn't share any similarity at all but for some reason I think of it when I think of these movies, Looper.

I couldn't get through it. It just didn't seem to go anywhere and the story made no sense to me nor did I really care about any of the characters.

I liked the movie, but I suspect the pacing of the moving is to slow for modern audiences. I could just Imagine how poorly 2001 A Space Odyssey would do if it was released for the first time today.

morrowind was better

You guys always say that. We'll always say "Oblivion with mods, blah, blah, blah".

Seriously, I like the film. Caught it on sale at Amazon for less than $10. Felt like I got my money's worth. Generally don't care for Cruise, but he was remarkably restrained in this one.

I enjoyed Oblivion as well. I didn't think it was a work of art or anything. It was fun and interesting the whole way through, which is more than I can say for the majority of movies I watch. Edge of Tomorrow was much better though.
