You know, shortylickens, I just realized that maybe I was projecting other people's reactions onto you (from some other thread, don't recall what it was about specifically off the top of my head but was full of exactly the kind of attitudes that you're talking about in here). I bring that up because my initial reaction was going to be "what are you doing here if you don't like putting up with angry man children" considering how many threads that have been explicitly that, and then I looked at who made the thread and then thought, maybe I was lumping you in with some others unfairly. Sorry
Gaming across the board has become so toxic that I literally only play games with one friend now and actively avoid seeking out playing with other people (if they're not just psychotic people spouting every vile thing they can they're hypercompetitive assholes who can't take losing, or they're people who micromanage how you play a game). Its not just when playing either. I think that it has created a feedback loop of aggression and so people get pissed off and try to use gaming as their escape only to then get pissed off because of the gaming, and it just keeps fueling their anger. I think this is separate and distinct (but correlated with) the general theories about assholes on the internet. Even when I agree with the complaints (for instance how many games have performance issues or get left broken when they didn't transition the game, like several that are basically unplayable now due to Games for Windows Live ending) I quickly find the reactions to reach alarming levels of vitriol, and often is due to rampant ignorance. And that's a dangerous combination.
The scariest part though is that I actually remember being a typical 13 year old shithead and acting like a lot of those people, but seeing how many of them didn't mature much if at all (and there's quite a lot of them that seem to have even gone the other direction where they've become even angrier and more ignorant as adults). Maybe it has something to do with the rise of streaming, where instead of it putting a mirror to them to see how ridiculous of assholes they are, they're actually getting rewarded for it and so its being reinforced.
