I see the counterstrike community hasn't changed much in 10 years.

Logged in for all of 3 minutes. Was referred to as an african-american, a homosexual, a less than intelligent female dog, and an incestual son.

I should probably find someplace to hang out that doesn't cater to angry children in grown mens bodies.

VR (Vive & Steam, specifically) is still a pretty decent place to hang out, for now, because you have to drop so much money to get into it that it kind of limits who gets in. Most of the community are 30 yo+ nerdy males who can afford to drop a couple grand on a gaming setup, so it's a surprisingly nice place to play & communicate (most of the time). Eventually the prices will drop & we'll get a hoard of trash-talking middle-schoolers, but for now it's not bad!

based on the voices I was hearing over counterstrike, it was mostly 30 yo+ nerdy males.

I'm guessing. Perhaps it was 21 year olds in between classes. The kind who have no idea how to make a computer and just like to swear all day cuz they think it makes them sound tough.

Seems to be the internet in general. I can go to comments on nearly any website(ESPN, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, CNN, Etc.) and there is undoubtedly a racist, sexist, antisemitic, or homophobic post. It seems people aren't afraid to be who they really are behind a screen.

I play quite a bit of CS and would agree that the community is toxic. I'm a little surprised that Valve doesn't crack down on the text chat at the very least. Most of what I see violates the terms of service and is logged by Valve. It would be pretty simple to just start handing out temp bans for people posting racist, evil stuff in games. Not much they can do about the voice, for now, but the text chat should be easy. I would also like them to implement a permanent voice block for individuals. Would be nice to just globally block the idiots from my games.

perhaps the concept of competitive online play where the objective is to annihilate your opponent digitally is structural basis for rude communication

It's too bad online gaming with chat has degenerated so much. I remember playing that Socom US Navy Seals game for the PS2 and voice chat was courteous the majority of the time. This was with everyone using a mic because the game came with one.

Are you sure you're not playing Battlefield 1?

I've seen others challenged to "1v1" and very liberal use of the n-word -- occasionally to refer to the avatars on the American side. Some have also been referred to as homosexual using a different word.

It's been like this for a while. I used to turn my sound up to hear people on their mics. Then I realized I didn't like being bitched out over random bullshit by teenagers and more likely, fully grown adults. Now mic/voice chat is muted always.

I've found the RO2 community to be top notch except for a handful of blatant racists, but that seems to be a given.

I'm sure they'd be less mean if you baked each of them a pie. I mean, did you even try that?

I agree, I can't imagine it would take more than a day to come up with a program that scans the logs and produces a list of people to ban for whatever lengths are appropriate. I guess they figure they would lose money from those people not buying skins or whatever else is sold.

If I stumble into a server like that, I leave. Generally I find it not to be much of a problem. If someone is trolling the server with hate, I usually change to their username and start talking up the opposite ideology.

You know, shortylickens, I just realized that maybe I was projecting other people's reactions onto you (from some other thread, don't recall what it was about specifically off the top of my head but was full of exactly the kind of attitudes that you're talking about in here). I bring that up because my initial reaction was going to be "what are you doing here if you don't like putting up with angry man children" considering how many threads that have been explicitly that, and then I looked at who made the thread and then thought, maybe I was lumping you in with some others unfairly. Sorry

Gaming across the board has become so toxic that I literally only play games with one friend now and actively avoid seeking out playing with other people (if they're not just psychotic people spouting every vile thing they can they're hypercompetitive assholes who can't take losing, or they're people who micromanage how you play a game). Its not just when playing either. I think that it has created a feedback loop of aggression and so people get pissed off and try to use gaming as their escape only to then get pissed off because of the gaming, and it just keeps fueling their anger. I think this is separate and distinct (but correlated with) the general theories about assholes on the internet. Even when I agree with the complaints (for instance how many games have performance issues or get left broken when they didn't transition the game, like several that are basically unplayable now due to Games for Windows Live ending) I quickly find the reactions to reach alarming levels of vitriol, and often is due to rampant ignorance. And that's a dangerous combination.

The scariest part though is that I actually remember being a typical 13 year old shithead and acting like a lot of those people, but seeing how many of them didn't mature much if at all (and there's quite a lot of them that seem to have even gone the other direction where they've become even angrier and more ignorant as adults). Maybe it has something to do with the rise of streaming, where instead of it putting a mirror to them to see how ridiculous of assholes they are, they're actually getting rewarded for it and so its being reinforced.

LOL, I had someone go off on me recently in Battlefield 1. I just said, in team chat, that we had a lot of useless snipers. LOL, which was true, but that was all I said. Then a guy in my squad pipes up over the microphone and gets all offended and starts insulting me and going on about how I think that the SQUAD had too many snipers (not even what I originally said). I replied a couple times in chat to his verbal statements but he was just a belligerent little chodesmoker. He didn't have the voice of a 12 year old but I doubt he was any older than early 20s (if so, God help him). He just had a big fuckin mouth and thought he was really something special.

But yeah, in general it's not just Counterstrike. Any online game has a large percentage of shit talkers and belligerent people who really think they're top notch shit. I wish Battlefield 1 had servers where the minimum age was 30 or something, cause while it wouldn't solve the issue it would certainly help out.

Money definitely plays a role. I don't know that there is any great way to combat this right now. While I kinda liked the idea of putting people like that into a pool where they'd play each other, I think that would maybe actually make them worse and lead to them cooperating. And frankly I don't think any company wants to do it for simple reasons (it requires resources, plus they'd effectively have to catalogue/record all the input, and then process it, and then they have to come up with rules to define, often which are easy to skirt, see the way people started using ninja instead of the slur for black people). Plus anytime they do stuff like this then it churns up the "censorship!" cries and seems to just turn things more toxic (for instance, how many people that jumped on the GamerGate because they were mad that this other stuff was being talked about with regards to games was ruining gaming as their escapism yet how many of them rail on about "safe spaces" being ridiculous bullshit without seeing how hypocritical that is).

That won't help. I'm reasonably sure that the biggest shit talkers are over 20. Over 25/30s have given me the most shit online in my experience. As I get older, I realize that people don't really grow up, they just hide things better and people don't hide online.

I try to kill them with kindness

This.

I find that if they are trying to get a rise out of me, they give up pretty quick if I don't give them what they want. Other times, it'll actually either turn that person down and they become a decent human; or, the rest of the server will start to shun that player and they end up leaving.

Takes way more energy to tear someone down than it does to build them up.

It's not just counterstrike. And if you think the US chats are bad, you should see the non-US text chats. Particularly bad are the Indian / Bangladeshi chats. The text regarding women..... is beyond filth. The way that they regard 'lesser' castes is terrifying. And the most scary is that these are CHILDREN, which means we've got generations more of this kind of hatred. Horrible.

This is true for the most part, but there is very little in way of competative play in VR yet. The thing that bothers me at the moment are all the people who think taking large bong hits into their mic is cool. I turn most voice chat off by default so I dont have to deal with idiots.
